#9 Oregon vs. Iowa – November 8
Week 11 of college football is packed with must-watch matchups, and few are bigger than No. 9 Oregon heading to Iowa City to take on the Hawkeyes. The 6-3 Hawkeyes are looking to prove they deserve a spot in the top 25 of the AP Poll while sitting at No. 20 in the College Football Playoff rankings. Both teams enter at 4-1 in conference play. Who comes out on top?
The Ducks opened as a 7.5 point favorite on the look-ahead line, but I grabbed Iowa at +7.5 more than ten days ago to get ahead of the movement. The line has since dropped to 6.5 in favor of Oregon. The total is currently listed at 41 on BetOnline, and I lean toward the under. I expect this to be a close, physical game from start to finish. Winning at Kinnick Stadium is never easy, and Oregon will have its hands full.
Duck Hunting Season
I love Iowa in this spot. If this game were in Eugene, I might feel differently, but this Hawkeyes team has my trust. It is one of the most complete Iowa teams we have seen in years. They are averaging over 30 points per game while holding opponents to just two touchdowns on average, which ranks fifth nationally. The defense has been outstanding, allowing fewer than 244 yards per game, good for third in the country. Both the rush and pass defense are elite, sitting inside the top ten in yards allowed per rush, pass, and play. In short, this is vintage Iowa football.
Offensively, quarterback Mark Gronowski has brought new life to the unit. The senior plays with power and poise, giving off strong Tim Tebow vibes. If he needs to run, he will lower his shoulder and fight for every yard. He already has 11 rushing touchdowns this season and sets the tone for the entire offense.
Some will say Iowa has not faced much competition outside of Indiana, and that is fair. Others will point to the sloppy showing at Rutgers, and again, fair. But Iowa was clearly looking ahead to hosting Indiana that week and still came away with a 38-28 win. My respect for this Indiana team is high enough to believe Iowa does not need another big-name opponent to validate itself.
Both Oregon and Iowa have faced Indiana this season, and both lost. Oregon fell by ten, while Iowa lost by five.
Many are questioning who Iowa has beaten, but who has Oregon beaten? Their schedules are nearly identical. This matchup will reveal a lot about both programs: whether Oregon is truly a playoff-caliber team, or if Iowa deserves more respect in the rankings.
This feels like a statement game for Iowa, and I believe the Hawkeyes rise to the moment in front of their home crowd. Six and a half points feels like too many for Oregon on the road against a legitimate defense.
