For quite possibly the first time in school history, the Vanderbilt Commodores bring their top 20 ranking into Neville Arena to take on the unranked Auburn Tigers. Both teams are among the seven SEC teams with either a 6-4 or a 5-5 conference record, making up the meat in the middle on the standings. The two teams go head to head tonight in their only contest this season. Will Steven Pearl and his team be able to pull this off? Or can the Commodores find a way to upset their hosts? Auburn is looking to avoid a third straight loss in the SEC tonight
The Commodores started this season with 16 straight wins. They were a perfect 13-0 during non conference play, and opened up things in the SEC with three straight wins. But all good things must come to an end. After winning their first three in conference play, they ended up losing their next three, dropping games to Texas and Arkansas on the road, and to Florida in Nashville. Now they sit at 6-4 in the SEC and 19-4 overall, and are looking to bounce back after losing at home to Oklahoma.
Auburn has had a bumpy season if you compare it to last year where they were the consensus No. 1 overall seed in the tournament. Their biggest winning streak of this season is four, which they did achieve during conference play. However they have now lost two straight after beating the Florida Gators in their own gym. Will they be able to wake up and stop a very motivated Vanderbilt team?

While I don't have faith in the Commodores to win the game, I think they are more than capable of scoring. They should have plenty of chances to do so, considering both teams have no problem getting up and down the floor. Vanderbilt is a top 40 team in terms of possessions per game, and even away from home they are in the top 50. This team is incredibly efficient on both offense and defense, breaking the top 40 in 3P%, 2P% and FT%, while ranking No. 13 in overall defensive efficiency. Now what about the Tigers?
While they come in ranked No. 161 in terms of pace, they jump nearly 40 spots while at home. Plus, they are very offensively driven, as the defensive side of the ball could use some work. In the SEC, Auburn is third worst in opponent eFG% on their home floor, and fourth worst in opponent 3P% and opponent 3P Rate. Vanderbilt is a team that already shoots tons of threes, ranking top 75 in 3P Rate while hitting them at a 37.7% clip. The Tigers have given up plenty of points to teams who aren't afraid to run.
Auburn allowed 102 to Michigan, 97 to Arizona, 88 to Purdue, 104 to Georgia, 90 to Texas A&M and 96 to Alabama just last Saturday at home. The Commodores can shoot the ball well, they create plenty of opportunities for their scorers, and I see them being able to break 80 again tonight.
