Letdown spot incoming.
The Dayton Flyers are coming off a massive home upset over No. 9 Marquette on Saturday, defeating the Golden Eagles 71-63 as short underdogs. Now, they face a 5-4 UNLV team fresh off a win against Pacific, snapping a three-game losing streak.
The Flyers find themselves in a clear sandwich spot—Marquette on Saturday, UNLV tonight, and a quick turnaround for No. 19 Cincinnati on Friday in a neutral-site showdown at Fifth Third Arena. Is Dayton already looking ahead to the Bearcats while the Rebels, with UC Riverside up next, focus entirely on tonight? This game feels far more meaningful for UNLV.
Despite being ranked 143rd in strength of schedule, the Rebels have battled through a grueling slate, facing four top-100 teams: Memphis (40th), Mississippi State (29th), Northwestern (51st), and Creighton (36th), all per Bart Torvik. While winless against those opponents, UNLV managed to keep two games within single digits. Their biggest issue has been defending the three, where they rank 288th nationally, but Dayton—while efficient from deep—does not rely heavily on the long ball. If the Rebels can limit Dayton's threes, they can keep this one close.
Both teams play at a slower pace, sitting in the mid-to-high 200s in tempo per Haslametrics. Dayton boasts a top-20 offense, but UNLV's top-140 defense should be enough to keep this competitive.
All in all, this is a tough scheduling spot for Dayton. Coming off their biggest win of the season, now hosting a solid Rebels team before another top-20 matchup, the Flyers are ripe for a letdown. UNLV will catch them looking ahead and take advantage.
