The Big East regular season title race took a major turn last night with Marquette winning at Creighton and Villanova upsetting Xavier in Cincinnati. Tonight, the Golden Eagles will be rooting for UConn as the #18 Huskies host #20 Providence (6:30 pm ET, FS1).
Thanks to last night's results, Marquette (22-6, 14-3 Big East) is one and a half games up on Providence (20-7, 12-4 Big East), while Xavier (20-8, 12-5 Big East) and Creighton (18-10, 12-5 Big East) are now two games behind.
If the Huskies are able to handle the Friars tonight at Gampel Pavillion, the title race won't mathematically be over. But realistically it would be, given that Marquette finishes with home games against DePaul (9-18, 3-13 Big East) and St. John's (16-12, 6-11 Big East) sandwiched around a trip to Butler (13-15, 5-12 Big East).

Trends Favor Offensive Success for UConn Against Providence
Last time out, the Huskies didn't have their best game offensively, but they did enough for a nine-point home win over Seton Hall last Saturday.
The 64 points that UConn scored were a low for a home game this season, as they shot 22.2% (4 of 18) from three and 42.3% (22 of 52) from the field overall.
But the Huskies should have a better showing tonight against Providence, based on what they have done at home this season.
They have scored 74 or more points in all but two home games, with a 69-60 win over Creighton last month being the other exception.
Also, UConn has averaged 9.3 made threes per game in their other seven home games in Big East play. That is a shade higher than the 8.9 made threes that they average per game overall this season.
Where to Bet on Providence vs UConn
Jordan Hawkins, the team's second-leading scorer, has been a big part of their offensive success at home.
Hawkins (16.4 PPG) was only 3 of 11 from three against Seton Hall, but he scored a team-leading 20 points against the Pirates. It was his fourth straight 20-point game at home, and he has scored 20+ points six times in eight home games in Big East play.
The sophomore guard has scored 20+ points ten times overall this season, and the Huskies are 8-2 in those games. All eight of those wins have come by at least eight points, so if Hawkins can hit the 20-point mark for a fifth straight home, spread bettors will have reason to be optimistic.

Home teams didn't have a good night in last night's big games in the Big East, as Xavier fell by a point at home against Villanova and Creighton was edged out by two points by Marquette.
