Pittsburgh Panthers vs. #18 Virginia Cavaliers NCAA Basketball Insights

Jeff Capel and Pittsburgh need to find some ways to win in the ACC
The Cavaliers have lost just three games this season, to Butler very early on at a neutral site, at Virginia Tech, their rival, in triple overtime, and to a very good North Carolina team at home. Other than that, they've handled business. Along with being 18-3 overall and 10-1 in their own gym, the Cavaliers are also 11-10 against the spread, but have failed to cover in three straight. Will they do so tonight as over a double digit favorite?
Pittsburgh has been disappointing to say the least, posting a 9-12 record and are just 2-7 in ACC play. They beat Georgia Tech on the road and Wake Forest at home in overtime, and only have one top 50 win on their record so far. The Panthers beat the Cavaliers back in 2024 in Charlottesville, but things have changed since then. Will they be able to compete tonight on the road?

The Panthers are a painfully slow team that has no offense. They rank No. 329 overall in terms of pace, but in six true road games they drop to 10th slowest in the entire country. They are also bottom 12 in getting to the free throw line, bottom 25 in 3P%, and fourth worst at shooting from the stripe, making just 60% of their free throws as a team. Their defense is better than their offense, but not by much.
Lucky for them, Virginia is a team that also plays slow and meticulous basketball. The Cavaliers are No. 275 in the nation jumping just 15 spots on their home floor. I don't expect the tempo of this game to get out of control, and I certainly trust the Virginia defense to step up and get the job done. They just lost to the Tar Heels at home as 7.5 point favorites, and gave up 97 points to Notre Dame. That's enough to scare me into locking down defensively, even with a weaker offense coming to town.
The Cavaliers are very efficient on offense, and are a top 10 team in the nation in terms of opponent eFG% allowed. They defend the perimeter as well as anyone else in the country, and have fearless rim protectors to wield off guys driving to the hoop. Despite struggling to force turnovers, the Cavs are one of the best offensive rebounding teams in the nation, which could easily translate to more time off the clock and less time for the Panthers' offense to do anything.
