Friday night Big Ten hoops takes center stage as Northwestern travels to East Lansing to face No. 12 Michigan State. The Wildcats look to bounce back after a frustrating loss, while the Spartans aim to build momentum following a dominant showing earlier this week. Defense should dictate the tone, with Michigan State leaning on elite rebounding and rim protection, and Northwestern relying on discipline and half court execution. Pace projects to be slow, possessions valuable, and second chance points scarce. With both teams comfortable grinding, this matchup sets up as a physical, methodical battle inside Breslin Center on Friday night.

Northwestern vs. #12 Michigan State Bet
Friday Junior Big Ten hoops, nothing beats it, as the Northwestern Wildcats head north to East Lansing to take on No. 12 Michigan State. The Wildcats are coming off a tough home loss against Minnesota. Meanwhile, the Spartans are coming off a dominant performance earlier in the week after losing to Nebraska last Friday. Can Northwestern get back on track with a road win, or will Michigan State return to dominating its Big Ten opponents?
It is pretty simple. Death. Taxes. Michigan State unders. There is no other way I want to attack this game than by backing a team that is currently 10-5 to the under this season. After coming off a near 30-point win on Monday over the USC Trojans, I fully expect the second best defense in the country to show up and show out against Chicago's Big Ten team.
So far this season, the Spartans defense has dominated in several key areas. They are the number one rebounding team in the country, the sixth best shot blocking team, and rank 18th in two-point percentage defense. On top of that, they still sit inside the top 75 in three-point percentage defense, free throw rate defense, and eFG% defense.
This marks only Northwestern's third true road game, and I would argue it is really just their second. Playing DePaul on the road is essentially a home game. It is a 25 to 30 minute drive through the city to Wintrust in the South Loop, and the area is packed with Wildcat alumni. In my eyes, that leaves one true road game so far, which came against Wisconsin.
Defensively, Northwestern has maintained a top 120 unit. They rank inside the top 50 in eFG% defense and three-point percentage defense. They do a solid job keeping their hands to themselves, protecting the paint, and blocking shots. On the offensive side, they struggle from beyond the arc, ranking 269th in three-point percentage. In their six games away from home, they rank 308th in offensive rebounding. With Michigan State being the number one rebounding team in the nation, second chance points will be at a premium.
There will be no urgency in this ball game, with both teams sitting in the lower 200s in pace of play. Bart Torvik has Michigan State ranked 241st at home in tempo, while Northwestern ranks 271st away from home. This season, the Spartans are 11th in points allowed per game, giving up an average of 64.4 points. The Wildcats, on the other hand, are allowing 79.3. That adds up to 143. With Northwestern having nothing to look ahead to, I expect a focused effort in trying to take down the Spartans. Michigan State does not play again until next Tuesday, so motivation should be there to take care of business at home tonight as well.
