#4 North Carolina vs. #1 UConn 2026 Women's March Madness Sweet Sixteen Prediction & Picks cover

ncaab

While North Carolina men's basketball prepares for life beyond Hubert Davis (Donovan? Lloyd? Otzelberger? Byington?), the women's basketball program is set for its second straight Sweet Sixteen. Will the season end there for the Tar Heels for the second straight season? Unless one of the biggest tournaments occurs in today's North Carolina vs. UConn matchup, that will be the case.

The Tar Heels (28-7), who are seeded fourth in the Fort Worth 1 Regional, reached the second week of women's March Madness with wins over 13-seed Western Illinois (82-51) and 5-seed Maryland (74-66).

Now, the difficulty ramps up several notches for North Carolina with a regional semifinal showdown vs. UConn (36-0), the top overall seed in the tournament.

The defending national champions showed minimal mercy in the first two rounds, tossing aside 16-seed UTSA 90-52 and ninth-seeded Syracuse 98-45. The win over the Orange was UConn's eighth consecutive 30-point win and 30th 30-point win of the season, and it was the Huskies' 18th 90-point performance of the season.

Could a stiffer challenge come against North Carolina? At Lucky Rebel and other top online sportsbooks, UConn is favored by four touchdowns. However, this is a matchup that the Huskies have not faced frequently this season.

North Carolina vs. UConn TLDR

I don't see the Tar Heels keeping it close, but the over on UNC's team total carries value and appeal.

North Carolina vs. UConn Prediction and Analysis

Through the first 36 games of UConn's repeat run, only one team has managed to stay within single digits against the Huskies. That would be Michigan, who fell 72-69 on November 21. And only the Wolverines, Louisville (79-66 on November 4), Marquette (71-56 on February 14), and Villanova (83-69 on February 18) have kept it within 20.

That is impressive no matter how you shake it, but it can be noted that the Huskies have faced only five ranked opponents to date.

That's two fewer than North Carolina has entering today's matchup vs. UConn, but does it affect how things may play out today?

For context, the Tar Heels are just 2-5 against ranked teams (with the win over Maryland and a home win over Duke), though they went 9-6 in the regular season against teams who made the NCAA tournament.

The Tar Heels are a strong defensive team, ranking first in the ACC in field goal defense and second in the ACC in scoring defense and three-point defense. And though their leading scorer, Nyla Harris, averages only 11.5 PPG, the offensive attack is balanced, with four players averaging double figures and six averaging at least 8.7 PPG.

Also, coach Courtney Banghart operates with a deep rotation and adjusted well to the extended absence of Reniya Kelly, who has averaged 25.3 minutes per game but hasn't played since February 5. Thus far, UNC is 9-2 without Kelly, with both losses to Duke, the ACC's best team.

This is a very good all-around team, and were the Tar Heels going up against almost anyone else, I'd like their chances. Unfortunately, it's difficult to picture a close contest, even if North Carolina can put in a stronger defensive performance vs. UConn than most have this season.

North Carolina vs. UConn Picks

UNC Team Total Over 52.5 (-114 at Lucky Rebel)

North Carolina/UConn Over 133 (-118 at Lucky Rebel)

Though the Huskies should win this one comfortably, I like the Tar Heels to hit the over on their team total.

UConn has been stingy thus far in the tournament and has allowed 52 or fewer points in eight consecutive games (and 25 of 36 games this season). However, the Huskies have allowed 66, 69, 51, 64, and 66 points against ranked teams this season. The outlier there is a 28-point rout of USC, who had a rough season offensively without JuJu Watkins.

UNC has been held below 53 points just once this season (in a 23-point loss at Notre Dame on January 11), and the Tar Heels have scored 60 (vs. UCLA), 64 (vs. Texas), 66, 68, 74, 57, and 74 points against ranked teams this season.

That only counts for so much against UConn, but those numbers are part of why the over for the game also looks like a good move. Only one of North Carolina's games against a ranked team has gone under 133, while the only one of UConn's is the USC game. Both teams are among the best in the country defensively, but I think we will see enough points for both total plays to cash. Also, Bart Torvik's projections for today's women's March Madness games have this one down as a 77-57 UConn win, a projection that also lines up with both of these plays.
