Three years after reaching the Final Four for the first time in school history, Miami (the one from Florida, not Ohio) made a rousing return to March Madness with a 14-point win over Missouri, led by a defense that would have made Mario Cristobal proud. To reach the second week for the third time in as many tournament trips, another stout defensive effort will be required vs. Purdue and newly-minted record holder Braden Smith.

In their tournament opener on Friday, the seventh-seeded Hurricanes held Mizzou to 35% shooting from the field and just 66 points. Entering the game, the 10-seed Tigers were averaging 79.7 points per game and shooting 49.0% from the field, and they had been held to fewer than 70 points just six times in 32 games.

Can Miami produce another stingy showing on the defensive end vs. second-seeded Purdue? As of today, the Boilermakers sit atop KenPom and Bart Torvik's charts in adjusted offensive efficiency.

That well-oiled machine was on display in Purdue's 104-71 rout of Queens. The Royals were making their tournament debut, but there was no room for sentimentality and charity from the Boilermakers, who shot 58.3% from three and 63.1% overall from the field in giving the Atlantic Sun champions a one-way ticket to Elimination Station.

In the process, Purdue point guard Braden Smith became the all-time leading dime distributor in NCAA Division I history, passing Bobby Hurley.

How much of a gap can Smith create at the top before his collegiate career closes at some point in the next couple of weeks? If the Boilermakers back up the odds from Lucky Rebel and other top online sportsbooks, Smith will have at least one more game after this one.

Miami vs. Purdue TLDR

Miami's metrics and resume are deceiving. Purdue's resume and metrics are not. Bet accordingly.

Miami vs. Purdue Prediction and Analysis

At the time of writing, there are 18 teams in the top 35 of KenPom's rankings in both adjusted offensive efficiency and adjusted defensive efficiency.

Two of those 18 teams are in this matchup, but there's significantly more substance to the surface numbers for Purdue than for Miami.

This is certainly not a slight on what Miami has done this season in an ACC that had more depth than in recent seasons.

But they lost their two toughest non-conference games, an 82-68 loss to Florida and a 72-62 loss to BYU. Also, of the six tournament teams Miami faced in ACC play (the Hurricanes didn't face Duke at all), five have already been eliminated, and Virginia had to survive a spirited upset bid by 14-seed Wright State. And in most of their toughest conference contests, the Canes came out on the losing end.

That does not at all bode well for Miami vs. Purdue, who entered the NCAA tournament with a 10-7 record against teams who made the field of 68. And there is some serious meat on that bone, with wins at Alabama and Nebraska, a 30-point win over Texas Tech in the Bahamas, and Big Ten tournament wins over Nebraska and Michigan.

It is entirely possible that the Hurricanes can spring an upset here. Shelton Henderson and Dante Allen aside, there is a lot of high-level experience in Miami's core, led by someone who knows Purdue well in Malik Reneau, formerly of Indiana.

However, this one feels like going only one way, and that's the way of the Boilermakers, who should advance to the Sweet Sixteen for the seventh time in their last nine tournament appearances.

Miami vs. Purdue Expert Picks

Purdue -7.5 (-112 at Lucky Rebel)

Purdue Team Total Over 77 (-121 at Lucky Rebel)

Miami has a respectable record as an underdog this season, going 6-5 SU and 7-4 ATS, while Purdue hasn't excelled at covering as a favorite (13-19 ATS with a 25-7 SU mark).

But sizing up their respective resumes makes me feel rather comfortable in backing the Boilermakers to cover.

Also, one of Miami's major weaknesses is a major strength for Purdue. While the Boilermakers are one of the best three-point shooting teams in the country, the Hurricanes are one of the worst major conference teams (and rank close to 300th nationally) in defending the three.

That spells disaster for Miami, but for Purdue, it spells a cover, an over on the Boilermakers' team total, and a matchup with Texas in San Jose.
