The Kentucky Wildcats have been playing shorthanded all year long, but have they finally figured it out? Mark Pope's team has won five straight games after losing their first two in SEC play, but now head to Nashville for another tough conference battle. The No. 18 Vanderbilt Commodores won't go down easy. They started off the season winning 16 straight games, but then dropped three consecutively before beating Mississippi State on the road this past weekend. Will they get things back on track tonight at home? Let's get into our expert's favorite picks to find out.

Otega Oweh and the shorthanded Kentucky Wildcats take on the Vanderbilt Commodores on Tuesday - Kentucky Vanderbilt Picks

Otega Oweh and the shorthanded Kentucky Wildcats take on the Vanderbilt Commodores on Tuesday

The Wildcats sit at 14-6 overall and are unranked, yet they are near the top of the SEC after going 5-2 in their first seven conference games. Vanderbilt, despite being ranked No. 18 and posting a 17-3 record sit below them by going just 4-3 in conference play so far. What's going to give tonight?

Kentucky will be without Jaland Lowe, Jayden Quaintance and Kam Williams. Now, they've played most of the season without those first two listed, and have figured out how to get it done with them on the sidelines, but Vandy is a different animal, especially on the defensive side of things at home. The Wildcats have their work cut out for them, and I could see their offense failing to keep up in this game where we should see plenty of possessions.

Kentucky is a team who is already plenty fast, ranking inside the top 150 in possessions per game, and their defense falls apart on the road. Overall they rank No. 52 in adjusted defensive efficiency and No. 46 in opponent eFG%. However, in seven games away from Rupp Arena, they drop to No. 114 overall defensively and No. 292 in opponent eFG%, not to mention jumping from top 75 to No. 268 in offensive rebounds allowed.

They struggle to defend the perimeter, and Vandy has already dropped one at home this year. I don't think they let it happen again.

Kentucky vs. Vanderbilt Prediction: Vanderbilt Wins and Covers, Over 159.5

The Commodores average over 70 possessions per game ranking No. 42 in pace. That number jumps to 72.5 trips up and down the floor at Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville. At home, they rank third in the nation in offensive efficiency, are top 40 in eFG%, and are the best team in the country at taking care of the basketball. Despite playing fast, they play under control and get their sets in.

They aren't overly reliant on the three ball, and are top 12 in 2P% and shoot 77% from the free throw line as a team. But their defense should be the difference maker in this contest tonight.

The Commodores are top 20 in overall defensive efficiency, are top 50 in defensive rebounding and are top 45 in opponent eFG%. Without Lowe, Quaintance and Williams, the Wildcats will rely on Otega Oweh to lead the scoring. Sure, he is capable of doing so, but given the number of possessions we should see in this game, I think it could get out of hand. He can't keep up alone.

Plus the Commodores are top 10 in defending the perimeter, allowing teams to shoot under 29% from downtown when playing in Nashville. Vandy has the edge on both sides of the ball, and I think it leads to a double digit victory. The Wildcats have been too hot for too long, the Commodores already came back down to Earth, and now they are ready to knock Kentucky down a peg or two.
