To close out the first day of the Sweet 16, we have two great teams and great coaches going head to head. Kelvin Sampson and the No. 2 Houston Cougars are staying in their own city as they face Brad Underwood and his No. 3 Illinois Fighting Illini. Both teams have made very easy work of their first two games of this tournament, but now face a very tough opponent. Milos Uzan and and Houston are looking to get back to the National Championship, but Illinois might stand in their way
Yes, this is going to feel like a home game for the Cougars. But it's not a familiar gym. There may be some offensive struggles from either side, as always when playing in an arena like this for the first time in a season. I have been very high on the Illini all season long, and will try not to let my 40-1 future cloud my judgement when capping this specific game. However, they are a very tough matchup for the Cougars.
Not only are they much bigger in the front court, but they also have the guards to combat Kingston Flemings and Milos Uzan. Illinois has one of the best on ball defenders in the country in Kylan Boswell. On the other side, Keaton Wagler can handle a majority of the scoring. Defensively, they'll make it very tough for Houston to put the ball in the hoop, which happens when they face a solid defense.

Houston only scored 67 points against Iowa State, only 66 against Arizona, and only 56 against Kansas. All three of those teams have great perimeter defenses, matched with some big bodies inside. Illinois' roster is constructed the same way. They have not one, but two (2) seven footers who can protect the rim. Plus their guards are very big and long. Houston simply does not have the size to compete down low, and I certainly don't trust their outside shooting enough to keep them in this game.
Illinois shoots the three ball well, they take care of the basketball, and they rebound as good as anyone in the country. But the kicker? Illinois defends without fouling. They are a top 25 defense in terms of efficiency, and lead the country in FT Rate defense. Teams simply do not get to the stripe when facing the Illini. In what will likely be a low scoring game thanks to the pace I expect, points are going to be hard to come by. They'll be extremely valuable.
The Illini are better equipped to earn their points from the free throw line. But they'll also score from second chance points and their outside shooting. Illinois has more scoring options, and won't need to turn to one man to play hero ball if they get in trouble. Kingston Flemings is just one man, and he's a freshman trying to lead a group back to the National Title. I think the veteran experience of the Illini comes into play tonight. They are led by Boswell, Ben Humrichous and the Ivisic twins, I see them punching their ticket to an all Big Ten South Regional Final.
