With a heart-stopping, buzzer-beating win, one of the beasts of women's college basketball was slain last night in Sacramento. But if Duke is to end a two-decade Final Four drought, the Blue Devils must find a way to jettison another juggernaut from the tournament as they go up vs. UCLA in the Sacramento 2 championship game.
The third-seeded Blue Devils (27-8) were double-digit underdogs against second-seeded LSU but had the better of the Tigers for the overwhelming majority of the game at Golden 1 Center.
But after trailing by nine with three and a half minutes left, LSU went on a 10-0 run to take a one-point lead with seconds left. But Duke got a second chance after a missed three by Taina Mair, and Ashlon Jackson made the most of it by sinking a three that used all of the rim before dropping.
It was a moment of March Madness magic, and it was also sweet redemption for Jackson. Jackson, who had 19 points and five assists, missed two crucial free throws with 19 seconds left, when the Blue Devils were ahead by one, then atoned in the best possible way. The 87-85 win took Duke to its second consecutive Elite Eight, in pursuit of a first Final Four berth since 2006.
A win vs. UCLA (34-1) will end that drought for Duke, but it will require doing what only Texas has been able to do this season. Last night, Minnesota put up a valiant effort for more than a half but was eventually overrun in an 80-56 romp.
The outlook isn't as bleak for the Blue Devils as it was for the Golden Gophers, but it is not overly promising, either. At Lucky Rebel and other top online sportsbooks, Duke is a double-digit underdog for the second straight game.
Duke vs. UCLA TLDR
It won't be another 30-point blowout win for the Bruins, but the Blue Devils won't have enough juice to pull a second straight stunner.

Duke vs. UCLA Prediction and Analysis
Defense has been the biggest reason for Duke's 24-2 run, but offense came through in the win over LSU. The Blue Devils scored 80+ points for just the 13th time this season and won while allowing 80+ points for only the second time in Kara Lawson's tenure.
Duke will likely need to get back to Blue Devil basics to have the best chance possible vs. UCLA, who shut down Minnesota for the second time this season. For the night, the Bruins held the Golden Gophers to 37.9% (22 of 56) shooting. It was just a five-point game at halftime, but UCLA outscored Minnesota 46-27 in the second half to win going away.
At the other end, the Bruins shot over 50% from the field and scored 80+ points for the 26th time this season.
Defense is also UCLA's calling card, but offense has been humming along. Over the last four games, the Bruins have made 54.5% of their shots from the field and scored 96, 96, 87, and 80 points.
Duke already knows what it is like to have a bad day vs. UCLA, as the Blue Devils had a very, very Thanksgiving Day (or night, to be more specific) in an 89-59 loss in Las Vegas. The Bruins made 13 of 22 threes and shot 52.5% from the field overall as they handed the Blue Devils one of six early-season losses.
Duke reserved a regular season loss in last night's win over LSU, who won 93-77 when the teams met in Durham in December, but can the Blue Devils pull an even bigger flip of fortunes in this rematch with the Bruins?
I highly doubt we will see another 30-point win for UCLA, but I do not see Duke pulling a second straight upset.
Duke vs. UCLA Picks
Duke/UCLA Over 130.5 (-110 at Lucky Rebel)
UCLA Team Total Over 69.5 (-120 at Lucky Rebel)
Because defense is such a strength for both teams, the total for this matchup is fairly low. That creates an opportunity here.
To date, only five of UCLA's 35 games have gone under 130.5. The percentages are higher for Duke's games but given that the Blue Devils aren't as prolific offensively as the Bruins, 21 of 35 (60%) still comes out to a decent percentage.
Also, while Duke is one of the toughest defensive assignments UCLA has had this season, the Bruins have been held to fewer than 70 points just twice this season, fellow Elite Eight teams Texas (in a 76-65 loss to the Longhorns in Las Vegas) and Michigan (in a 69-66 win over the Longhorns in Ann Arbor).
I don't see Duke allowing 85+ points vs. LSU for a second time this season, but I expect to see both listed overs hit. That would line up with Bart Torvik's projections for Sunday's women's Elite Eight games, which have UCLA winning 72-62.
