Happy Festivus Eve, my friends. Despite the Monday slate being a bit of a snoozer, there are still some interesting storylines and angles to attack, even in this matchup between Coppin State and Georgetown. The Hoyas will be without head coach Ed Cooley after he threw a water bottle into the stands and struck a child following their loss to Xavier on Saturday. Cooley was later suspended and will not coach tonight's game.
No Cooley, No Problem
With the holidays approaching, motivation is at an all time high to close the first half of the season on a strong note. I lean toward the over in this spot. I grabbed it at 148.5 earlier this morning. I still endorse 150, but I would not take it any higher. We will be relying on one of the worst teams in college basketball to help contribute. However, with Cooley out, it is fair to question how motivated this Georgetown team will be?
Pace of Play
On the season, the Hoyas profile as a slower team, but their home splits tell a different story. According to Bart Torvik, Georgetown ranks 105th in tempo across their seven home games this season. The Eagles should welcome that, as they sit 89th in pace on the year. Similar to the tempo split, Georgetown has maintained a top 150 defense overall, but at home they rank 215th in adjusted defensive efficiency. They have struggled to force turnovers, limit trips to the free throw line, and defend the perimeter.
On the offensive end, the Hoyas rank 117th in adjusted offensive efficiency at home. They are also top 40 in both turnover percentage and free throw rate. That sets up well against Coppin State, which sits bottom 100 in free throw rate defense, 2 point defense, and 3 point defense. Expect the clock to stop often for foul shots tonight.
With the quick turnaround for both the Hoyas and Eagles, both teams should be ready to show out before the holiday break. There should be plenty of possessions, giving us a strong chance for points to come cheap and often. With Cooley out, perhaps Georgetown eases up defensively, knowing they can score at will on the other end. Either way, I expect a lot of points in this one.
