#13 Vanderbilt vs. Memphis Best Bet
Game of the night is going down in Memphis, where No. 13 Vanderbilt rolls in with a perfect 10 and 0 record to take on the Memphis Tigers. The hometown Tigers are coming off a tough loss to Louisville in its previous matchup on Saturday. With all the early tests Memphis has endured this season, can they finally step up in their biggest challenge yet? I think so.
Everyone Loves Vandy
I think Vanderbilt is getting a little too much love in this matchup. The line has already moved to 9.5 from the opening 8.5. Catching nearly 10 points with a team that has played the 9th toughest schedule in college basketball is a lot. Sure, the Commodores have been great, opening the season a perfect 10 and 0. However, they have played only one true road game, which came back on November 8, when they beat UCF 105 to 93.
Trust the Battle Tested Team
The Tigers may own a losing record, but they have faced 6 top 100 teams in their first 9 games. They picked up wins over San Francisco, who is always strong in the WCC, and Baylor, who always shows up. Their losses have come against Ole Miss, Purdue, Wake Forest, and Louisville. Notably, they covered the 14.5 point spread against Purdue, losing by just 9. In their most recent matchup against the Cardinals, the Tigers allowed Louisville to shoot 55% from the floor and 51% from beyond the arc. If they can clean that up and improve their perimeter defense, they should be fine tonight at home.
Memphis still owns a top 100 offense and a top 75 defense. This season, the Tigers have excelled in second chance points, ranking 34th in offensive rebounding. They are also an excellent shot blocking team, ranking 71st in block percentage defense. Despite issues on the perimeter, they rank 103rd in interior defense.
Haslametrics is showing plenty of love for the Memphis Tigers, giving them a sizable edge in momentum, along with advantages in consistency and home court. Haslametrics projects the Tigers to lose by 13, while Bart Torvik has them losing by 7, meaning neither projection is close to the current spread. Vanderbilt has been fantastic to start the season, but they may be due for a stumble at some point, not necessarily tonight.
The Commodores have benefited from playing more than half of their games at home, with the rest on neutral courts, aside from the lone true road game. This sets up as a great test to see if this number is too high or if Vanderbilt is truly the real deal. I trust the team that has been tested repeatedly this season. Go Tigers.
