#11 Gonzaga vs. #18 Kentucky Best Bet
The game of the night features two top 25 programs, as No. 11 Gonzaga heads to Lexington to take on No. 18 Kentucky. Both teams are coming off tough losses and are looking to bounce back. The Wildcats have once again fallen short against a top 25 opponent, and the question is whether they can respond on Friday night. Let's dive into this one!
Lifeless Cats
Has there been a more disappointing team this season than the Kentucky Wildcats? The answer is no, their $22 million dollar roster has fallen short in every big game they have played. They have faced the 227th toughest schedule this season and they have fallen short against all three teams inside the top 25 they have taken on to start the year. Those teams are Louisville, Michigan State, and North Carolina. They have dealt with injuries, but they look lifeless. Friday night they will once again be without Jaland Lowe, Mouhamed Dioubate, and Jayden Quaintance.
On the other side, Gonzaga looks like one of the most complete teams in the country. They did get demolished by Michigan, who looks unbelievable this season. However, after taking on Oklahoma, Creighton, Arizona State, Alabama, and Maryland to open the year, they were due for a letdown. Now coming off ten days of rest, I fully expect this Gonzaga team to dominate Big Blue Nation on their home court.
That is why I grabbed the Bulldogs at 3.5. I missed the opening 2.5 because I thought the moneyline would appear and I would be able to grab a strong price. However, I still like the 3.5. I am very high on this Gonzaga team, and if this is the spot where the Wildcats bounce back and find their rhythm, so be it. It would be about time this $22 million dollar roster gets rolling. They would just need to do it against a top 20 offense and a top ten defense.
Keys to Success
There are several key areas where the Wildcats have struggled against their top 25 opponents. First, three-point shooting. They are top 120 in three-point rate, but they sit at 269th in three-point percentage. They are not winning on the boards either, ranked 232nd in offensive rebounding and 216th in defensive rebounding. They do not force turnovers and they do not defend the three at a high level.
Meanwhile, against top 100 teams, Gonzaga is 35th in turnover percentage offense, 56th in turnover rate defense, 12th in defensive rebounding, and 66th in offensive rebounding. The Bulldogs have not been an elite three-point shooting group against top 100 teams, but they do not rely on the deep ball, ranked 278th in three-point rate. The Bulldogs should be able to exploit the Wildcats flaws and secure the road victory.
Overall, this is a spot where I need Kentucky to prove it can play at the level required against top 25 competition. I have not been impressed this season, and until they are fully healthy, they could be a full fade moving forward. I am a Mark Pope guy, so I hope they keep it competitive. However, my 20/1 ticket on Gonzaga means more to me than Big Blue Nation success. GO ZAGS!
