Main Event: Mateusz Gamrot vs Quillan Salkilld Preview – Lightweight

Main Event Fighters Made The Welterweight Limit To Make The Bout Official
The highly anticipated Main Event of UFC Vegas 120 kicks off in just a few hours! A match up of top lightweight prospects awaits featuring the return of highly touted prospect Quillan Salkilld.
The Australian striker will have the toughest match up of his career as he takes on dominant wrestler Mateusz Gamrot. Earlier this year Gamrot bounced back with a much needed win over Esteban Ribovics.
Even more impressively he finished the fight by submission in the second round. The win marked his first real finish win in 5 years, with 6 of his last 7 fights going to decision.
Match ups featuring Gamrot typically tend to go the distance due to his grapple heavy game plans. A relentless wrestler, Gamrot chains together take downs to wear down his opponents.
One thing should be said about his relentless wrestling, the amount of takedowns is less impressive when you consider that his opponents get up easily. Securing a takedown is one thing, but controlling on the ground is a whole different ball game.
The problem for Gamrot in most match ups is that if the wrestling does not work he is somewhat of a liability on the feet. Striking defense is the real culprit as Gamrot often allows his opponents to land flush in exchanges.
Will Gamrot Take Advantage Of His Wrestling?
With that being said when Gamrot is the one having success striking, he does carry huge power in his hands. He is just a take three to give 1 type of fighter and eventually the chin cant keep up.
The ground and pound aspect of his grappling game leaves much to desire at many points. Often Gamrot is choosing position over damage in many fights which could lead to him getting down on the scorecards if he is unable to score any damage on the ground.
If one thing is for sure, Gamrot's wrestling skills will severely tested the rising prospect tonight. Salkilld has made waves since joining the UFC but his grappling has never quite been tested like it will tonight.
In 2021 Salkilld earned his contract on Dana White's Contender series with a decision victory over Gauge Young. The win improved his record to just 6-1 showing just how green he was to the sport at the time.
He may have not found the finish in the fight but his skills impressed Dana enough to earn a contract. Salkilld has made the most of every opportunity he has received since by putting together a 5 fight win streak.
The streak has come with multiple step ups in competition where he has shined. On the 5 fight win streak, Salkilld has finished 4 of those bouts including 3 by knockout and 1 by submission.
Will Salkilld Pass His Latest Test?
A couple of those knockouts will be shown in UFC highlights for years to come. The head kick from hell he landed on Haqparast was legendary, becoming one of the biggest highlights of 2025.
In his last match up over Beneil Dariush he was forced to overcome adversity as he was taken down and controlled early on. Salkilld went on to show his improvement in grappling to get up and eventually find a big punch to put Dariush away.
Matchmakers have seen his progress and giving him the next best test they can in grappling against Gamrot. There is no doubt he will have to show serious takedown defense in order to get his striking going.
The UFC has shown to trust Salkillds skillset by fast tracking him to the top of the division. Tonights bout will mark Salkillds first headlining opportunity with the promotion, and I expect Salkilld to rise to the occasion as he has in every fight thus far.
