Featured Prelim: Marcus McGhee vs John Yannis Preview – Bantamweight

UFC Vegas 118 Belal Muhammad vs Gabriel Bonfim Preliminary Card Preview, Odds, Watch Info & FAQ

Marcus Mcghee Looks To Bounce Back Against Yannis In Vegas

Saturday night will mark the return of top contender Marcus Mcghee. The UFC has given him a great match up as he takes on UFC newcomer John Yannis in the featured preliminary bout.

Yannis is coming off a huge upset win in his second UFC bout at UFC Winnipeg. The newcomer defeated the home town prospect Jamie Siraj in impressive fashion.

Yannis was able to show off his striking in a quick knock out victory. The bout only lasted half of a round, ending within the first 3 minutes of round 1.

He had a tough first bout in the UFC, being signed on short notice to fight top prospect Austin Bashi. Unfortunately he was submitted in the first round but the bout was nothing to be ashamed of.

Yannis was on a 3 fight knockout streak in Fury FC before getting the short notice call. At UFC Winnipeg the impressive knock out victory showed his skills are UFC level and paved the way to a big step up in competition.

Marcus Mcghee is no easy night for any bantamweight never mind a 31 year old new comer like Yannis. Mcghee also got his UFC shot on short notice when he signed to fight Journey Newsome in 2023.

Will Mcghee Bounce Back At UFC Vegas 118?

He went into the fight as a big underdog and surprised everyone with a round 2 submission victory. Unlike most bantamweight prospects, the UFC gave Mcghee a chance at 34 years old.

Mcghee made sure to take off running with the opportunity. He went on to win his next 3 bouts including 3 of 4 wins coming by way of finish.

The win streak earned him a headlining spot against former champion Petr Yan in Abu Dhabi. Unfortunately he walked away with a loss after Yan battered him around the cage for 3 straight rounds.

Petr Yan is a top level Bantamweight and Mcghee may have just taken the step up in competition to soon. Saturday night he gets a much deserved step down in competition against Yannis.

The bout will mark a perfect opportunity to bounce back from a tough loss. With an impressive finish, Mcghee will put himself right back into the Bantamweight title picture.

Marcus Mcghee vs John Yannis Odds:

  • Moneyline: Marcus Mcghee (-450) vs John Yannis (+350)
  • Round Total: 2.5 Total Rounds – Over (+120) / Under (-140)
  • Most Likely Method Of Victory: Marcus Mcghee By KO/TKO (+140)

Joanderson Brito vs Jordan Leavitt Preview – Bantamweight

UFC Vegas 118 Belal Muhammad vs Gabriel Bonfim Preliminary Card Preview, Odds, Watch Info & FAQ

Brito Will Make His Return To Take On Featherweight Newcomer Jordan Leavitt

Joanderson Brito will step into the octagon once again when he takes on Featherweight newcomer Jordan Leavitt on Saturday. Leavitt will be making his second appearance at Featherweight after making his first 8 UFC appearances at lightweight.

The former lightweight made quite the splash in the featherweight division as he upset top prospect Yadier del Valle. Leavitt proved his wrestling skills are still top level and may actually suit him better down a weight class.

At featherweight Leavitt has more of a size advantage over his opponents which helps his grappling tremendously. Also by being the bigger fighter in the match up, it tends to give him more of a strength advantage which is a key component in wrestling.

Fans have always known Leavitt is a great grappler but the striking is where he becomes a legitimate liability. The striking defense is very poor in many instances, which forces many panic take down attempts and has gotten Leavitt into serious trouble on his run.

In his last performance many fans did not see enough of the striking to determine if it has been an area of improvement for Leavitt. The UFC has not given him the worse match up here, as Brito gives up to much control time when taken down.

Brito excels when he is given space to throw his big power strikes. The once top contender is very powerful for light weight racking up 3 knockouts in his 6 UFC wins.

Can Brito Prove His Grappling Once And For All?

In the grappling department, he also has some very slick submission attempts, with 2 of his wins coming by way of submission. Both of those were entirely opportunistic where his opponent made a grave mistake and Brito was able to take full advantage of it.

Brito has not had the best match ups as of late, with 2 of his last 3 opponents being pure wrestlers. As fore mentioned, his biggest downfall on his run has been his takedown defense.

Not only is he not defensively sound in the area, once taken down he gives up a lot of control time. Brito often gives up the entire round if he is taken down, burning minutes in guard rather then building a base to get up.

I believe there is a path to victory for both fighters in this match up. If Brito is able to use his striking and power to force Leavitt to make a mistake, he has a clear path to victory with high finishing equity.

The same can be said for Leavitt in many cases. If he is able to take Brito down consistently and negate his explosive style, he should be able to cruise to a decision victory here.

Joanderson Brito vs Jordan Leavitt Odds:

  • Moneyline: Joanderson Brito (-200) vs Jordan Leavitt (+170)
  • Round Total: 2.5 Total Rounds – Over (-120) / Under (+100)
  • Most Likely Method Of Victory: Joanderson Brito By Points (+235)
