Main Event: Belal Muhammad vs Gabriel Bonfim Preview – Welterweight

Exciting Main Event Between Former Champion Muhammad And Rising Contender Bonfim
The Main Event of UFC Vegas 118 is an exciting match up of Veteran against top prospect. Former Welterweight champion Belal Muhammad will defend his ranking against top prospect Gabriel Bonfim.
Bonfim has made a splash on the scene since joining the UFC in 2023. In his first 7 bouts he has produced 4 impressive finishes and a couple other great performances to improve his record to 6-1.
The prospect has put together a 4 fight winning streak now with back to back wins over proven veterans. Bonfim is coming off a highlight reel knockout of Randy Brown, a win that propelled his name in the welterweight standings.
Much like many other high level prospects, Bonfim's run has not come without controversy. Within his first 4 bouts in the promotion he was tested against the cardio machine Nicolas Dalby.
Bonfim gassed himself out early throwing big power shots and extensive grappling. Dalby took over and broke Bonfim late in the 2nd round.
It seems as if he has seriously turned a corner in his career after the loss as he has looked career best since. He will look to improve to a 5 win streak tonight which is no easy task against a proven veteran like Muhammad.
Muhammad has not had the best shake of things as of late. The former champion is coming off back to back losses including losing his belt to Jack Della Maddalena in 2025.
In the loss to Della Maddalena he was systematically dismantled over the course of 5 rounds. Muhammad was unable to get his wrestling going and was forced to box with Della Maddalena.
Will Bonfim Prove He Is A Top Contender?
The damage began to add up and Muhammad ultimately lost a clear decision. The UFC brass decided to clear him out of the title picture entirely by not giving him a rematch for his belt.
They opted to give him yet another intense match up with lengthy striker Ian Garry. Once again Muhammad was unable to get the wrestling going and was out pointed to a decision loss.
At 37 years old it is unclear of Muhammad has lost his edge in the grappling. One thing is for sure and that striking is not exactly his strong suit at this point in his career.
Often taking a lot of damage in order to get his own punches off. After time this all adds up and the damage on the face will show.
The one advantage he has coming into this bout is control time. If Muhammad is able to get his wrestling going Bonfim will typically like to play the BJJ game when taking down.
Once securing a takedown I believe that is when Muhammad could shine here. Muhammad needs to secure the takedowns, land ground strikes and ultimately break the will of Bonfim.
Even with the improvements Bonfim has made, fans have seen him look for the door before. If he has looked for the door before, MMA fans should not be surprised if he does again.
