mma

Saturday night marks the return of 2 former champions in the Main Event of UFC Oklahoma. Former Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman will take on former Middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis.

The bout is sure to be a grapple heavy affair as both fighters rely heavily on wrestling. Du Plessis has even gone as far to say he took this match up against Usman to specifically show off his improved wrestling skills.

As if the Main Event was not enough, the UFC has stacked the preliminary card for the home town crowd as well. There are 7 high level match ups scheduled for the prelims, including top contenders squaring off in the featured preliminary bout.

Austin Bashi will look to show off improved striking on Jose Delgado in a top contenders match up. Many fans are deflated from the heart break at UFC 329 and UFC Oklahoma is set up perfectly to get back on the right page.

Featured Preliminary Bout: Austin Bashi vs Jose Delgado Preview – Featherweight

UFC Oklahoma Dricus Du Plessis vs Kamaru Usman Preliminary Card Preview, Odds, Watch Info & FAQ

Top Featherweight Prospects Face Off In The Featured Prelim

The Featured preliminary bout of UFC Oklahoma features a showcase of upcoming featherweight prospects. Jose Delgado will take on Austin Bashi in a top rising contenders match up.

It is rare we see the UFC match up rising stars like this especially with such a clash of styles. Jose Delgado is the striker in the match up, while Bashi brings a high level grappling challenge to the bout.

What makes the fight ever more interesting is both contenders are coming off bounce back victories. The prospects both received their first UFC loss in the previous bout, it is safe to say they are at the same place in their careers.

Jose Delgado has made quite the splash since joining the UFC due to his smooth striking style. The MMA Lab product Delgado started his UFC career with 3 straight knock out victories in impressive fashion.

The first knockout on the contender series is what earned him his UFC contract. Moving forward Delgado took the momentum and ran with it by knocking out his next 2 opponents with rather ease.

Much like many top UFC prospects, Delgado dropped the ball in his first big step up in competition. He received his fist loss to Nathanial Wood in a closely contested match up.

Will Delgado Continue His Run?

Delgado seemed to just let the fight slip away as Wood used his veteran IQ to secure the victory in the 3rd round. 1 loss does not define a prospect and Delgado did not let it get the best of him as he bounced back with a big win over Andre Fili.

As of recent Delgado has gotten the opportunity to show off his takedown defense more. The prospect has answered many questions and proved he is not just a slick striker.

If one thing is for certain it is that he will need every bit of that takedown defense against Austin Bashi saturday night. Bashi is a highly decorated grappler despite only being 24 years old.

Will Bashi Show Improved Striking?

Much like his counter part, Bashi made a splash on the scene on Dana Whites contender series. He defeated Dorian Ramos in rather quick fashion, submitting him in under 2 rounds.

The bout showed just how high level his grappling is by racking up control time and fishing for submissions. Many were impressed with his performance and highly anticipating his first official UFC bout.

As a 24 year old prospect many could expect he would grow and make improvements. Unfortunately , they did not come quick enough as he lost his UFC debut match up to the prospect killer Christian Rodrigues.

The loss is not one to be ashamed of, as we have seen Rodrigues de rail many prospects over the years. The loss did not deter him from his journey, as the prospect bounced back with a big submission victory in his next bout.

The UFC seems to be throwing him into the fire a bit with a match up like this in my opinion. There is no doubt Bashi needs to improve his striking to be a top prospect, but throwing him in there with Delgado this early on may be a mistake.
