Main Event: Ilia Topuria vs Justin Gaethje Preview – Lightweight Championship

UFC Freedom 250 Ilia Topuria vs Justin Gaethje Preview, Odds, Watch Info & FAQ

The Highly Anticipated Lightweight Championship Bout

Sunday night will see the return of current champion Ilia Topuria when he takes on Justin Gaethje. Topuria will be returning from a leave of absence due to personal issues he had to resolve.

In his absence MMA fans saw Justin Gaethje rise to the occasion and capture the interim belt. The longtime veteran of the UFC put on a masterclass performance in January over top prospect Paddy Pimblett.

The "Human Highlight" looked career best in his performance, dismantling Pimblett enroute to a decision victory. A career best performance at this point in his career is encouraging as this will most likely be his last chance at the undisputed belt.

Sunday night will also mark the 5th time Gaethje has attempted to claim lightweight gold. An unprecedented feat although only achieving the interim belt twice, he has never gotten his hands on true undisputed gold.

Failing to claim the belt is nothing to scoff at once you start digging into his resume. Gaethje has fought the best the lightweight division has to offer in his 9 year UFC career.

The Veteran has the record for most performance bonus's in the division. Everytime he shows up to fight, fans know they are in for some fire works.

Gaethje has a very come forward, pressure heavy and aggressive style that has worked in most cases. He has only been knocked out one time under the UFC banner and it has become the ultimate highlight reel for the UFC.

The knockout came in the final seconds of a brutal war with Max Holloway. The bout will go down in infamy as Holloway pointed down in the final seconds and the contenders threw caution to the wind with Gaethje getting the worse end of it.

The style of Gaethje that has found him so much success might also be his downfall in this match up. An aggressive pressure heavy style is exactly the type of fight Topuria wants.

Will Gaethje Finally Claim Undisputed Gold?

Ilia Topuria has quickly emerged as one of the best to ever grace the UFC. He has become somewhat of a legend killer, as he has knocked out some of the biggest names in the sport on his run to the top.

Starting his career in the featherweight division, it took him just 6 bouts to earn a title shot. The title shot came against another legend of the sport Alexander Volkanovski.

Topuria easily dismantled the veteran in just 2 rounds, becoming the first to knock out Volkanovski at featherweight. The win was just the beginning of his legendary run.

Topuria went on to defend the featherweight belt against another legend Max Hollway. Much like previous opponents, Topuria made quick work of Holloway in under 3 rounds.

The knockout victory was the first of its kind as Holloway made a career of his legendary chin and never being knocked out. The run did not stop there, as Topuria moved on to fight his 3rd legend in a row.

Topuria felt he had done everything at featherweight so he moved up to lightweight to challenge for the vacant belt. Charles Oliveira stepped up to fight Topuria and suffered the same fate as the previous 2 legends, a first round knockout loss.

Sunday's bout marks the first lightweight title defense for the 2x champion Topuria. The heavy hands and great grappling may be to much for Gaethje to handle at this point in his career.

I expect Topuria to continue his run of dismantling legends of the sport. Unfortunately for Gaethje, his style plays right into what Topuria does best and he may walk right into a heavy right hook.

Ilia Topuria (C) vs Justin Gaethje Odds:

  • Moneyline: Ilia Topuria (-600) vs Justin Gaethje (+450)
  • Round Total: 1.5 Total Rounds – Over (-112) / Under (-108)
  • Most Likely Method Of Victory: Ilia Topuria By KO/TKO (-235)

Co – Main Event: Alex Pereira vs Cyril Gane – Interim Heavyweight Championship

UFC Freedom 250 Ilia Topuria vs Justin Gaethje Preview, Odds, Watch Info & FAQ

The Heavyweight Debut Of Alex Pereira Against Cyril Gane

Tommorow night will mark the first appearance for Alex Pereira in the heavyweight division. He will take on Cyril Gane for the Interim Heavyweight championship belt, as Aspinall has been on the sidelines for quite some time with an eye injury.

The bout will be historic as no UFC fighter has ever claimed a championship belt in 3 weight classes. There have been 3x champions, but never a 3 division champion.

There is no better fighter to attempt the feat then the phenom that is Alex Pereira. Since joining the UFC just 5 years ago Pereira has accomplished amazing feats inside the octagon.

When he made his first appearance in the octagon, it was in the middleweight division. Pereira had aspirations of a trilogy fight with then current champion Isreal Adesanya.

In his first 3 bouts with the UFC Pereira made a big impression, going 3-0 with 2 highlight reel knockouts. It was enough to earn him the title shot, where he went on to defeat Adesanya to capture his first UFC belt.

In speaking of 3x champions, Pereira has already accomplished that feat. The Brazilian superstar won the light heavyweight belt over Jiri Prochazka and defended twice before losing to Magomed Ankalaev.

In the loss Pereira looked career worse with low volume and not letting his hands go. He implemented a very kick heavy game plan while being outstruck in a kickboxing match in which he ultimately lost by decision.

The performance seemed off for many fans and subsequently led to many injury talks after the fight. Pereira went out and proved he was injured in the rematch by dismantling Ankalaev in the first round.

The first round KO helped him reclaim the LHW belt and allow him to pursue his aspirations of a heavyweight appearance. Already a legend of the sport Pereira is now chasing GOAT status with a win over Cyril Gane.

Will Pereira Become The First 3 Division Champion Ever?

A win over Cyril Gane is no easy feat and much easier said then done. Gane has been with the UFC for over 7 years now and made 12 appearances inside the octagon.

He has fought the best of the best in his career, going on to fight for the title 4x now. Much like the main event and Gaethje, Gane also has never held the undisputed championship title although once winning the interim belt.

In early 2021 Gane took on Derrick Lewis for the interim championship belt. He was able to knock Lewis out inside 3 rounds and get his first taste of gold.

Since, he has not had the same luck in his attempts to become undisputed champion. Gane has gone on to lose to Francis Ngannou, Jon Jones in his next 2 attempts at the belt.

Despite coming up short in both attempts, he went on to challenge Tom Aspinall once again for the undisputed title. The bout ended in controversy with a questionable eye poke leaving Aspinall unable to continue.

The bout was ruled a no contest and has subsequently led Gane to yet another interim title shot. I believe Gane is the perfect style opponent for a quick Light heavyweight fighter that has since moved up to heavyweight.

Gane is a very talented athlete on all levels, he is very agile for someone of his frame. The footwork and versatility to his striking has made him a tough test for many heavyweights.

In most fights, Gane is typically the faster fighter against his opponents. This will be the first time in his career he will lose the speed advantage against an opponent.

This will also likely be the first bout of his career where he has a massive grappling advantage. The question remains, will he use his wrestling to stop the powerful force that is Alex Pereira?

Alex Pereira vs Cyril Gane Odds:

  • Moneyline: Alex Pereira (-110) vs Cyril Gane (-110)
  • Round Total: 2.5 Total Rounds – Over (-160) / Under (+140)
  • Most Likely Method Of Victory: Alex Pereira By KO/TKO (+130)
