UFC 328 Khamzat Chimaev vs Sean Strickland Preliminary Card Preview, Odds, Watch Info & FAQ

mma

The UFC is heading to Newark New Jersey for an exciting 13 fight card at UFC 328. The UFC is pulling out all the stops as the card is headlined by not just one but two title fights!

Loud mouth Sean Strickland will finally get his shot at earning his belt back when he takes on Khamzat Chimaev. Chimaev will be making his first title defense since earning the belt in 2025.

The match up is a pure grapple vs striker style fight which is a common theme of the card. Much like the Main Event, the co – main event is also a typical grappler vs striker match up.

Joshua Van will look to defend his title for the first time when he takes on highly touted prospect Tatsuro Taira. The match up is specifically intriguing due to Van struggling with grapplers in the past and Taira struggling with strikers in the past.

The Preliminary part of the fight card will be a perfect lead up to the Main card. The undercard is stacked with many high level fights that could be on the Main card of most UFC events.

MMA fans are certainly in for a treat with the stacked card in Newark. Lets not waste anymore time and get right into a preview of the Preliminary card of UFC 328!

Featured Preliminary Bout: Ateba Gautier vs Ozzy Diaz Preview – Middleweight

UFC 328 Khamzat Chimaev vs Sean Strickland Preliminary Card Preview, Odds, Watch Info & FAQ

Gautier Makes His Return Against Another Struggling Prospect

Saturday night marks the return of one of the UFC's fastest rising prospects. Ateba Gautier will look to continue his run to the top when he takes on Ozzy Diaz.

Diaz has been with the UFC for just 2 fights now, going 1-1 on his run. He was signed on short notice to fight Mingyang Zhang at UFC Macau.

The promotion was familiar with his game as he made a contender series appearance in 2022. Unfortunately he ran into an immovable object, getting knocked out by Joe Pyfer in the 1st round.

Diaz was on the other side of a career defining performance, when Dana white touted the "Be like Joe Pyfer" phrase. Despite the devastating loss, Diaz went on to win 2 more regional fights before being signed.

At 35 years old, Diaz is not much of a contender although he is coming off a massive upset victory. Even with some momentum in this match up, he will have his hands full with legit prospect Ateba Gautier.

Will Gautier Show Off His Power Once Again?

Gautier has been incredibly impressive since earning his contract on the contender series. It has become abundantly clear the UFC is behind him, hand picking soft ball match ups for him.

In his first 4 fights with the promotion Gautier has gone 4-0 with 3 brutal KO finishes. Marking a very impressive start to his career but he still has not made the step up in competition.

The prospect is showing signs of improvement in his game, becoming more then just a power puncher. In his last bout Gautier showed off his cardio and grappling ability.

Gautier deviated from his one shot knockout strategy and chose to be patient. He picked his shots well, proved he has 3 round cardio, and showed volume striking.

The UFC is still being careful with their prospect giving Gautier the Diaz match up. Diaz has been knocked out 3 times in his career, which makes this a tailor made match up for Gautier to shine.

Ateba Gautier vs Ozzy Diaz Odds:

  • Moneyline: Ateba Gautier (-1600) vs Ozzy Diaz (+900)
  • Round Total: 1.5 Total Rounds – Over (+245) / Under (-300)
  • Most Likely Method Of Victory: Ateba Gautier By KO/TKO (-475)

Joel Alvarez vs Yaroslav Amosov Preview – Welterweight

UFC 328 Khamzat Chimaev vs Sean Strickland Preliminary Card Preview, Odds, Watch Info & FAQ

Amosov Will Welcome Alvarez To The Welterweight Division

A very interesting match up in the welterweight division goes down at UFC 328. Joel Alvarez will make his debut to the welterweight division when he takes on Yaroslav Amosov.

Amosov is an established professional coming to the UFC after a long career in Bellator. In his 5 year run with Bellator Amosov went 8-1 including becoming a champion with the promotion.

The prospect took a leave of absence in 2023 to help the war effort in Ukraine. The small gesture proves the character of the fighter, fighting for more then money or his ego.

Typically a grappler in fights Amosov has impressive take downs and submission skills. In his UFC debut he took down Neil Magny and submitted him with ease in the first round.

In just his first UFC fight, Amosov got himself ranked and proved he can compete with the UFC's best. The UFC is capitalizing on that success and giving him a much harder match up here against Alvarez.

Joel Alvarez is a very talented Spanish prospect with 10 fights under the UFC banner. Thus far in his career he has made brutal weight cuts and fought at 155 lbs.

Will Alvarez Shine In His New Weight Class?

A massive frame for the light weight division it is no doubt he was nearly killing himself to make the weight. Despite that, Alvarez has been incredibly impressive on his 10 fight run.

Alvarez is 8-2 in those 10 fights, finishing 7 of those 8 wins. He is actually coming off one of the best performances of his career, where he showed real 3 round cardio enroute to a decision victory over Vicente Luque.

The only downside to his game is both of his losses came to wrestle heavy fighters. Which provides a significant advantage for Amosov in this match up as that is what he does best.

I believe the lesser weight cut of 170 lbs will only help improve that cardio and even improve his durability. With those improvements, it could help Alvarez defend the takedowns and land volume in the later rounds of the bout.

This match up of top prospects is an interesting one considering the fan hype behind both fighters. A top title contender is sure to prosper from this match up.
