USA vs Mexico Preview

The United States began their 2026 WBC campaign with a 15-5 win over Brazil, followed by a 9-1 victory against Great Britain. Their adversary, Mexico, also defeated both of those countries, winning 8-2 against Great Britain before demolishing Brazil, 16-0.

Those opponents were expected to be relatively easy tests for both teams, leaving this matchup between the bordering countries as the ultimate showdown in Pool B.

In the 2023 WBC, Mexico upset the U.S. during pool play with an 11-5 victory. However, the two wouldn't meet again, as Japan eventually eliminated Mexico in the semifinals before defeating the United States in the championship.

You can bet Team USA is eager to enact a bit of revenge, and they'll have a great arm taking the bump to help them do so. The 23-year-old reigning NL Cy Young winner, Paul Skenes, is scheduled to start for the United States tonight.

But remember, pitchers are capped at 65 pitches in pool play, so we shouldn't expect Skenes to go deep into the game. Still, the U.S. may not need him to. The roster has plenty of pitching depth, allowing other starters to work out of the bullpen. A realistic expectation would be around four innings from Skenes before turning things over to the rest of the staff. It's also a well-rested bullpen, considering the United States played with comfortable leads in each of its first two games.

But it shouldn't be a snooze fest. Mexico's lineup has been scorching hot, slashing .338/.442/.692 through the opening games of the tournament. Familiar faces such as Randy Arozarena, Jarren Duran, Alek Thomas, Rowdy Tellez, Jonathan Aranda and Alejandro Kirk have produced much of the offensive firepower.

On the other side, Team USA is slashing .314/.490/.471 through its first two games. Aaron Judge and Kyle Schwarber have done most of the damage so far, combining for six hits, two home runs and five RBIs. Outside of them, the rest of the lineup has contributed in a balanced effort when called upon.

Mexico will start 37-year-older right-hander Manny Barreda.

USA vs Mexico Prediction

I fully expect the United States to get their revenge and handle business against Mexico this evening. That's clearly the general perception as well, given the U.S. enters as a sizable favorite. Because of that, it's difficult to justify backing them on either the moneyline or runline.

Sure, you could consider laying 2.5 or even 3.5 runs with Team USA, but that's not something I typically do in baseball, and I'm certainly not looking to start now against a respectable Mexico lineup.

Instead, I believe one of the better wagers on the board is attacking the under. While I do think the United States' bats will eventually come alive, I also expect Paul Skenes to keep Mexico's offense in check for roughly four innings or so.

Mexico could certainly push across a few runs late, but it likely won't be enough to threaten a total as high as 11.5.

Look for a relatively lower-scoring contest, with Team USA ultimately coming out on top.
