It's that time of the year in the MLB Season! The trade deadline is rapidly approaching and this is the point in the season where front offices make their money. It's the question a lot of teams have to ask themselves, especially this year, "Are we going to buy or sell?"
The MLB Trade Deadline is on Monday, August 3rd at 6pm ET. As of writing this on Wednesday, July 29th there are only 8 teams that are guaranteed to sell (Reds, Mets, Giants, Rockies, Angles, Royals, Athletics, Blue Jays). All the other 22 teams in Major League Baseball are either in the playoffs or 3.5 games back of a playoff spot. These next couple of days are extremely crucial for teams and will dictate whether their front offices will decide to trade away pieces or acquire assets.

Top Trade Targets at the Deadline: #1 – Tarik Skubal

Tarik Skubal could be making his last start with the Tigers today
This is the domino everyone in the league is waiting to see fall. Will the Tigers move Skubal and who will they trade him to? Those are the biggest two questions we are waiting to see get answered at the deadline.
Skubal is the two-time defending AL-Cy Young winner and according to most the best pitcher in baseball. If a team were to acquire him their odds would jump drastically in the World Series futures market. There is belief by many people around the league that Skubal will get dealt because he is an impending free agent and the Tigers know they won't be able to resign him.
The Angels were in a similar position with Shohei Ohtani a few years ago. They had to decide if they were going to keep him and try and go for it or trade him and acquire a haul from another team. Instead, the worst case scenario happened for the Angels where they kept Ohtani, got no assets for him and missed the playoffs. That is what the Tigers don't want.
I believe that is why we see Skubal traded. The Tigers can't screw this up. You have a chance to set yourself up for the future and revamp your farm system. The Dodgers have been linked to Skubal since they have the best farm system in baseball. Maybe the Cubs or even the Rays go all in for him as well. I do think Skubal gets traded though and if he does then that team automatically becomes a contender to win a World Series if they aren't already.
Top Trade Targets at the Deadline: #2 – Mason Miller

There is some debate as to who the best starting pitcher in baseball is, but I don't think there is any debate on who the best reliever is – Mason Miller.
The San Diego closer to straight up filthy. He has pitched 44 2/3 innings this season with a 0.87 ERA. He has given up 4 ER this season and has 83 strikeouts. Last year the Athletics traded Mason Miller to the Padres and in return the Padres had to give up the #3 overall prospect in baseball, Leo De Vries along with 3 other prospects. For San Diego to trade away Mason Miller a team would need to give them a similar haul.
With each passing year that goes by it seems like relievers are becoming more and more valuable for teams in October. The days of watching starters throw eight innings or complete games consistently are gone. Teams are willing to give up a lot to get good relief pitching so you can imagine what they would give up to acquire Mason Miller who is signed through 2029.
Any team in baseball is probably in the market for Mason Miller, but I would say the Yankees, Pirates, Rays, and Phillies would be the teams most likely to get him. The Phillies window with this core is closing and I expect them to make a big splash. Yankees have made it known that they would really love to have Miller. I think he gets moved and somebody take a massive swing that helps their chances at a World Series.
Top Trade Targets at the Deadline: #3 – Adley Rutschman

Will the Orioles part ways with Rutschman?
This one is a bit of a wild card but I think has the potential to happen. It's been another disappointing season for the Orioles as they currently find themselves 2.5 games out of a wild card spot. There was so much promise for this young core of Orioles, but things haven't worked out. As we get to the trade deadline, there is a realistic shot the Orioles are sellers again and Adley is someone that could be dealt.
The Orioles have their young catcher of the future in Samuel Basallo who they signed to a long term contract last season and with the acquisition of Pete Alonso at first base it kind of feels like Rutschman is the odd man out. The Orioles desperately need pitching and Rustchman is a great trade piece Baltimore can offer to teams.
Currently he is on the 10-day injured list and that has been an issue this season and last season, but when he has been healthy this year he has been awesome. Even despite the injury concerns there are a lot of teams that would be desperate to add Adley's bat in the lineup because he is a switch hitter. The teams we have already talked about like the Yankees, Rays, Pirates, Phillies all could be in the mix.
