The latest result also stood out because summer usually brings weaker betting activity. June, July, and August ranked among the lowest-revenue months in 2024 and 2025.

This year, June surpassed May's total and came close to February's figure. Major sporting events helped reverse the usual seasonal slowdown.

The FIFA World Cup made its North Carolina betting debut during June. The NBA Finals also provided another major source of betting opportunities.

Still, the Carolina Hurricanes remained the biggest local sports story. Their run created significant interest in North Carolina gambling as the team pursued the NHL championship.

Hurricanes' 16-3 Playoff Run Drives Local Betting Interest

The Carolina Hurricanes finished the playoffs with a remarkable 16-3 record. The team then defeated the Vegas Golden Knights in six games to win the Stanley Cup.

The result produced a relatively low 9.2% sportsbook hold. June became only the second month in the previous year with a single-digit hold.

The Hurricanes' successful playoff run likely helped explain the high payout total. Many local fans backed a popular championship favorite, and those wagers paid out as the team continued winning.

Promotional spending also increased sharply. Operators spent approximately $18.8 million on promotional bets and incentives.

That figure represented a 50% increase from the same month last year. As a result, the market generated strong betting volume without matching growth in operator revenue.

The figures show why handle does not always translate into higher sportsbook profits. Bettors won more money, while operators faced elevated promotional costs.

North Carolina still collected nearly $9.7 million in sports betting taxes during June. Year-to-date tax revenue reached approximately $71.7 million through the first six months of 2026.

North Carolina Raises Sports Betting Tax Rate to 23%

June also marked the final month under North Carolina's 18% sports betting tax rate. State lawmakers passed a budget that raises the operator tax to 23%.

The new rate applies to gross wagering revenue beginning in July 2026. Gov. Josh Stein signed the budget into law.

The change will increase the state's share of revenue from legal sports betting. North Carolina has already collected more than $300 million in taxes since the market launched.

The new budget also changes how the state distributes sports betting tax revenue. UNC and NC State athletic departments will receive a share for the first time.

Several other Football Bowl Subdivision schools can also receive funding under the revised distribution model. The schools could receive up to $5.8 million annually beginning in 2027.

The higher tax rate could also reshape the market for operators and bettors. Sports Betting Alliance representatives have warned that higher taxes may affect promotional offers and betting prices.

Operators could respond by reducing promotions or adjusting their pricing strategies. Bettors could therefore see changes across the legal market over time.

For now, North Carolina enters the new tax era after a record-setting June. The Hurricanes' Stanley Cup triumph helped create an exceptional betting environment.
