The Carolina Hurricanes are a professional ice hockey team based in Raleigh, North Carolina. Affectionately known by fans as the "Canes," they compete in the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference.
They are the only major professional sports championship-winning franchise in North Carolina. The Canes carry their distinctive red, black, and white color scheme and the swirling hurricane warning flag logo.
On the ice, the team has built a reputation for a high-intensity, "relentless" style of play. Additionally, they have one of the loudest and most loyal fan bases in the league.
The Hurricanes have transformed from an expansion-era underdog into a perennial Stanley Cup contender and a pillar of the Raleigh community.
Where Do the Carolina Hurricanes Play?
The Carolina Hurricanes play their home games at the Lenovo Center (formerly known as PNC Arena) in Raleigh. Since opening in 1999, the arena has become famous for its tailgating culture, which is often cited as the best in the NHL.
Fans gather hours before puck drop in the sprawling parking lots to grill and socialize. This creates a college-football-like atmosphere that is unique to the Raleigh market.
As of late 2025, the arena underwent a significant rebrand and began a massive multi-phase renovation project. This development is transforming the area into a vibrant mixed-use district with retail, dining, and entertainment spaces.
Inside, the arena is renowned for the "Crank the Siren" tradition. A local celebrity or veteran winds a loud hurricane siren to whip the crowd into a frenzy before the team takes the ice.
History of the Team
The franchise's roots trace back to 1972 as the New England Whalers of the WHA. They became the Hartford Whalers upon joining the NHL in 1979.
Facing financial challenges in Connecticut, the team relocated to North Carolina in 1997. After two initial seasons playing in Greensboro, the team moved to Raleigh and quickly found its footing.
The Hurricanes reached the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in 2002, but their crowning achievement came in 2006. Led by rookie goaltender Cam Ward and captain Rod Brind'Amour, the Hurricanes defeated the Edmonton Oilers in a thrilling seven-game series to bring the Stanley Cup to the Carolinas.
Following a period of rebuilding, the "Rod Brind'Amour Era" as head coach (beginning in 2018) revitalized the franchise. This era led to multiple division titles and deep playoff runs, including a dominant showing in the ongoing 2025-26 season.
Interesting Facts & Team Milestones

- 11-Game Win Streak: During the 2022-23 season, the Canes set a franchise record by winning 11 consecutive games.
- Centennial Connection: In 2024-25, the team honored its Whalers roots with popular "Whalers Night" events. The team wore the iconic green and blue jerseys.
Notable Players
Rod Brind'Amour
Brind'Amour is the ultimate icon of Hurricanes hockey. As captain, he famously tore the Stanley Cup out of Commissioner Gary Bettman's hands in 2006.
Notably, he is the only person to win a Cup with the franchise as both a player and (more recently) a coach.
Ron Francis
"Ronnie Franchise" is one of the greatest two-way centers in NHL history. He served as captain for both the Hartford Whalers and the Carolina Hurricanes, leading the team to the 2002 Finals.
He remains the franchise leader in career assists and was a key architect of the team's early Raleigh identity.
Sebastian Aho
Aho is the modern face of the franchise. He is a dynamic Finnish center known for his elite hockey IQ and shorthanded scoring ability.
Aho has consistently led the team in points throughout the 2020s. Moreover, he continues to chase franchise scoring records as the engine of the Canes' offense.
Cam Ward
Ward became a legend overnight during the 2006 playoffs. Entering as a rookie backup, he took over the starting role and won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.
He also backstopped the team to their only Stanley Cup. Ward remains the franchise leader in nearly every goaltending category.
Eric Staal
Staal was the offensive cornerstone of the 2006 championship team where he led the postseason in scoring. He served as the team's captain for seven seasons and holds the franchise record for most goals and points since the move to North Carolina.
Notable Coaches
Paul Maurice (1995-2003, 2008-2011)
Maurice was the first coach to lead the team in North Carolina. Across two different tenures, he coached over 750 games for the franchise. Notably, he led the "Cinderella" 2002 team to the Stanley Cup Finals. His longevity helped stabilize the team during its transition years.
Peter Laviolette (2003-2008)
Laviolette is the only head coach to win a Stanley Cup in Carolina. He implemented a fast-paced, aggressive system that perfectly suited the 2006 roster.
His "pressure-on-the-puck" philosophy remains a core part of the team's DNA today.
Rod Brind'Amour (2018-Present)
Since stepping behind the bench, Brind'Amour has become the winningest coach in franchise history by percentage. He won the Jack Adams Award in 2021 and has transformed the Hurricanes into a perennial top-five team in the NHL.
Brind'Amour instils a "work-first" culture that is the envy of the league.
