The PGA TOUR heads to Detroit Golf Club for the Rocket Classic as the golf calendar winds down. There are only a couple more tournaments before the FedEx Cup playoffs, and this should be an interesting stop. It's still looking like a birdiefest, but maybe not quite as easy as last week. Before we move on, check out the action at our top online sportsbooks.

Detroit Golf Club went through some major renovations recently, and there are fewer par 5s than we're used to seeing here. While I took course history into consideration, I also looked at other Donald Ross venues and baked that into the course‑history component of my model.

This is a pretty strong field for a non‑signature event, with some stars tuning up and plenty of young guys looking to prove it. Jackson Koivun is going to be a popular click after setting the golf world on fire last week, and I think he has as good a chance as anybody — but I'm not going in that direction.

There are a few other plays that are more interesting to me: guys who are long enough off the tee but still accurate, can score on par 4s, and are playing really good golf right now. Let's see what we've got.

Detroit Golf Club Course Information

You've still got to make a bunch of birdies here, but with fewer par 5s and tree‑lined fairways, accuracy off the tee matters too. You'll notice most of my card leans on guys who generate chances on par 4s, drive it well enough, and can get hot with the irons and the putter.

  • Location: Detroit, Michigan
  • Par & Length: Par 70, 7,328 yards
  • Difficulty: Birdiefest
  • Recent winners: Aldrich Potgieter (-22), Cameron Davis (-18), Rickie Fowler (-24)

Rocket Classic Picks and Best Bets

Quick note on structure: the numbers in each header are the Lucky Rebel win odds. My main stakes go on these each‑way placement bets listed below them. I'll sprinkle a little extra on shorter‑places ladders for each guy to double‑dip. For example, if I wanted $60 total on Ryan Gerard, I might put $40 on his +3000, 10‑places ticket and $20 on a smaller 3‑places ladder at a bigger number.

Here are my Rocket Classic picks:

  • Chris Gotterup +2800, E/W 3 places
  • Wyndham Clark +3500, E/W 3 places
  • Ryan Gerard +3000, E/W 10 places and +5500, E/W 3 places
  • Davis Thompson +3000, E/W 10 places and +6600, E/W 3 places
  • Chandler Phillips +9000, E/W 10 places and +20000, E/W 3 places
  • Cam Davis +19000, E/W 10 places and +40000, E/W 3 places

Chris Gotterup +1800 — Lucky Rebel Sportsbook

Chris Gotterup, one of the favorites to win the 2025 3M Open - 3M Open 2025 Predictions, Picks & Odds

Best Bet: +2800, E/W three places

No matter how you slice it, Gotterup is the real deal now. He's the number‑one ranked golfer in my model this week and also grades out with one of the highest course fits. He hasn't missed a cut since February, and he's gained "true strokes," according to Data Golf, on approach in every tournament except two this season. He's also gained strokes off the tee in all but one start.

Gotterup is coming off the Open Championship, where he lost strokes putting for the first time since the winter. However, the rest of the recent form is outrageous: a win at the John Deere, a T11 at the Scottish Open, and a T18 at the Open despite losing strokes putting and around the green. He's turned himself into a legitimate star and is super long off the tee, which is important here. We just need some near-average accuracy, and he can make up plenty of strokes with distance, approach play, and a bounce‑back week on the greens.

Gotterup doesn't have much Rocket history to write home about in three career starts. The rising star lost strokes on approach in two of those and had one really bad putting week. But he's evolved into about twice the golfer he was two years ago, so I'm throwing most of that old history out. With three wins already in the 2026 calendar year, he's in a great spot to add another at the Rocket Classic.

Wyndham Clark +2200 — Lucky Rebel Sportsbook

2026 U.S. Open Final Round Odds, Predictions & Picks cover (2026 U.S. Open leader Wyndham Clark)

Best Bet: +3500, E/W three places

Clark should still be considered one of the hottest golfers of the season, even after his missed cut at the Open Championship. Given how that course played, I'm willing to toss that result. Before that, he'd won twice since the end of May, with two more top‑five finishes sprinkled in — and, of course, one of those wins was a little tournament called the U.S. Open.

It was probably good for him to take a week off, get back to the States, and return to a venue where he's had success. At Detroit, he finished T17 in 2019 and T8 in 2022 before a missed cut last year. In those starts, he generally drove it well while the approach numbers were more mixed. Clark is typically a very strong putter, and that seems to have carried since the spring, which can be a serious weapon here if the irons cooperate. He ranks third in my model this week, and I like pairing him with Gotterup at the top of my card.

Ryan Gerard +4000 — Lucky Rebel Sportsbook

Ryan Gerard

Best Bet: +3000, E/W 10 places and +5500, E/W three places

I've been on Gerard on and off all season, and the putter switch he made around the PGA Championship has paid real dividends. Since then, he's gained true putting strokes in six straight tournaments, which is a big development for a guy whose ball‑striking has always been solid.

The results match the profile: a T9 at the Open, a solo second at the Memorial in June, and a T10 at the Charles Schwab in May. Gerard is typically a very accurate driver of the golf ball and just long enough, with an approach game that's usually reliable.

If this putting revelation is real, he has a very good chance to make noise this week. His two Rocket starts don't show much in the way of finishes. He lost strokes putting in both, but last year he gained well over a stroke on approach at Detroit, which is exactly what we want heading back to this track.

Given the major renovations and the par‑5 changes, I'm not convinced that exact course history is ultra‑sticky here anyway. Gerard is in good form, trending the right way, and these numbers on him in the each‑way markets are very appealing.

Davis Thompson +5000 — Lucky Rebel Sportsbook

Best Bet: +3000, E/W 10 places and +6600, E/W three places

Thompson is one of those bets that doesn't feel warm and fuzzy, but he still ranks as the 11th‑best golfer in my model this week. He's coming off a T7 at the 3M and has gained approach strokes in three straight tournaments, which is a nice trend for a guy who's usually pretty solid with the irons.

Off the tee, he's typically slightly above average in both accuracy and distance. That makes him a pretty interesting fit at Detroit if the putter shows up. Course history is a selling point: he has a T2 at the Rocket from 2024 and has gained strokes off the tee and on approach in all four of his career starts here. He could be a nice little hedge if course history is indeed sticky, since I'm not considering it a dire need this week. Thompson's season results have been up and down, but he has three top‑10s dating back to the beginning of the year, and this layout really fits what he does well.

What I loved about that T7 at the 3M is that it didn't require a spike putting performance. In fact, he was barely positive with the flatstick. It was strong approach play and off‑the‑tee work that carried him. If that ball‑striking form rolls over into another scorable course like Detroit Golf Club, he's got real upside. The question is: Can he become an average putter for a few rounds?

Chandler Phillips +15000 — Lucky Rebel Sportsbook

Best Bet: +9000, E/W 10 places and +20000, E/W three places

Now we get to the bombs. These are the kind of plays where you split roughly a third of a unit between the big each‑way markets. The numbers are just too good to ignore.

Phillips isn't a bomber; he's below average in raw length. But he's usually accurate enough off the tee, and he's a very good putter, which is something I don't mind getting behind at a birdiefest. These are massive prices, and he has a T13 at the Rocket last year.

Phillips is also coming off a T3 at the 3M Open. Before that, he had three T15 finishes in three of his prior four starts. He's knocking on the door and clearly on a hot stretch. His approach game isn't anything to write home about, but I like the way his overall game is trending, and at this number I'm willing to ride someone who's clearly on a heater, especially with recent positive results at this venue.

I'd lean heavier on the each‑way 10‑places ticket and sprinkle a smaller amount on the 3‑places bomb, but having a little exposure at 200/1 for a guy in this kind of form is tough to pass up. If you can find any angle to sprinkle a play on someone at these prices, you simply let it rip.

Cam Davis +25000 — Lucky Rebel Sportsbook

Best Bet: +19000, E/W 10 places and +40000, E/W three places

Then there's Cam Davis. These are just absolute monster numbers being offered here. He's been absolutely terrible this season, but his course history at the Rocket is unbelievable, and if that proves more sticky than I'm anticipating, these prices could look silly by Sunday.

Davis is a two‑time winner here, taking the Rocket in both 2021 and 2024, and in between those wins he posted a T17 and a T14. These are the only two tournaments Davis has ever won on the PGA TOUR, which says plenty about how well Detroit Golf Club fits his eye. That alone is probably enough reason to splash something at these ridiculous odds.

Yes, he was playing much better golf a couple of years ago, but there are real reasons to at least consider him now. His approach play has been pretty good the last two weeks; he had a T21 at the Scottish and then was cut at the 3M. In fact, it's the first time in over a year — in tournaments with full data — that he's gained true strokes on approach in two consecutive starts.

Elite history at the only place he's ever won, combined with iron play that might finally be trending back in the right direction, is worth some pizza money at 190/1 and 400/1 with each‑way safety attached. I wouldn't be shocked if he finished dead last or came in first. Consider this a Ricky Bobby play.

What Is an Each‑Way Bet?

An each‑way bet is really two bets in one: a win bet and a place bet, stacked on the same golfer for equal stakes. If your guy wins, both halves cash; if he only finishes inside the "places" (say, the top 8), the win half loses, but the place half still pays out at a fraction of the listed odds — usually 1/4 or 1/5, depending on the book.

The number of places paid is set by the sportsbook and listed next to your ticket. You don't need a winner to get paid — you just need your guy hanging around the top of the leaderboard. Want the deeper breakdown? Here's how to bet on golf.
