The Indiana Fever have not made the WNBA playoffs or finished at .500 or better since the 2016 season. However, a big leap back to respectability and perhaps even more is expected this season after drafting Caitlin Clark.

Will Clark make an immediate impact in the pro ranks after a stellar career at Iowa? Tonight, she will make WNBA regular season debut as the Fever visit the Connecticut Sun (7:30 pm ET, ESPN2).

Last season, the Fever went 13-27, recording their most wins since 2019 but still falling short of the playoffs.

With Clark, the first overall pick in this year's WNBA Draft, pairing up with Aliyah Boston, the first pick in last year's WNBA Draft, the Fever are -300 to reach the postseason, according to BetOnline.

Tonight's showdown with one of the league's best teams might provide an early indication of where the Fever are at present and how far they may have to go. Connecticut is still searching for an elusive championship, but they have reached at least the semifinals each of the last five seasons. Also, across the previous three seasons, the Sun posted a 78-30 regular season record.

Indiana Fever vs Connecticut Sun Betting Analysis

Given the Fever's longtime status as one of the worst teams in the WNBA, any expectations about what they may do this season should be tempered until they get some games in.

But what is in store for them tonight?

Across the 2021, 2022, and 2023 seasons, the Sun went 41-13 SU and 32-21-1 ATS at home in the regular season.

So, Indiana has a big obstacle to break through if they want to start Clark's professional career with a victory.

However, there's reason to believe that they can at least keep it competitive tonight at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Last season, the Fever were only 7-13 SU on the road, but their ATS record was a much more respectable 10-8-2.

There will certainly be bumps along the way, but the addition of Clark should see the Fever be even more competitive, even if they don't reach the expectations that oddsmakers have for them.

That said, the Sun are likely to be one of the league's best teams once again, as they return their top three leading scorers, DeWanna Bonner (17.4 PPG), Brionna Jones (15.9 PPG), and Alyssa Thomas (15.5 PPG), as well as DiJonai Carrington (8.3 PPG), who is poised to have her best professional season.

Ultimately, this is a very tough opening assignment for a team that is still meshing and hasn't figured out how to win yet. Expect to see some positives and memorable moments tonight for the Fever, but an upset or even a cover might be a bit too much to ask right out of the gate.
