Tottenham Hotspur Facing Relegation with Four EPL Matches Left

The title of this article says it all. For the first time in history, one of the "Big Six" clubs in the English Premier League faces relegation. Clubs included are Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham, who is in serious danger of falling to the English League Championship for next season. Let's discuss.

Will Tottenham Be Relegated from the EPL Next Year?

If the season ended today, yes. The Spurs would be playing in the League Championship next year. However, they still have four matches to work with, so let's check out the EPL table and their remaining schedule to see if avoiding relegation is even possible.

As things currently stand, West Ham United has 36 points with a -16 goal differential. Tottenham has just 34 points, with a -10 goal differential. The good news for the Spurs, is that they do not have to overtake West Ham in points. Based on goal differential, they would win the tiebreaker if things are even on points. Therefore, Tottenham just needs to earn two more points than West Ham in their remaining four games.

Tottenham Remaining Schedule

  • May 3: at Aston Villa
  • May 11: vs. Leeds United
  • May 19: at Chelsea
  • May 24: vs. Everton

Tottenham has matches against two top 10 teams on the road, while hosting teams further down on the table. Six points is likely, but I don't see them earning more than eight during this final stretch. I would guess they earn closer to 3-4 points during these matches.

West Ham United Remaining Schedule

  • May 2: at Brentford
  • May 10: vs. Arsenal
  • May 17: at Newcastle United
  • May 24: vs. Leeds United

Things are slightly tougher for West Ham in my eyes, as I see them losing at least two of those matches (to Brentford and Arsenal). However given that the Spurs likely earn just 3-5 points, West Ham could get away with earning four in four matches, resulting in them staying in the Premier League.

This relegation race likely comes down to the final matches on May 24, giving us EPL fans excitement up until the very end.
