<p>Back in 2021, the teams met twice in the UCL Group Stage. Liverpool won both of those meetings, beating Atlético Madrid 3-2 on the road, and then shutting them out 2-0 at Anfield. They opened up against AFC Bournemouth at home, giving up a 2-0 lead late in the match, but ended up finding two more to win in the 88&#8242; minute and beyond. Next, they escaped on the road at Newcastle even with a man advantage, winning 3-2 with a goal in the 90&#8217;+10&#8242; minute. The past two matches, they&#8217;ve turned it on defensively, beating Arsenal and Burnley both by a score of 1-0, but needed a stoppage time penalty to do so on the road in their most recent match.</p>
<p>Will they regroup and be able to handle the task that is Atlético Madrid?</p>
<p>The Spanish side are 1-2-1 in La Liga play so far this season, but are coming off a shutout win. They lost to Espanyol on the road to open things up, giving up two late goals after an early 1-0 lead. Atlético went on to play both Elche and Alavés to a 1-1 draw, giving up early 1-0 leads in each contest. Finally, they were able to beat Villarreal on the road for their first La Liga win, doing so by a score of 2-0. Will they be able to pull themselves together for a tough road contest?</p>

<p>Atlético are a team that has already struggled to start this season against inferior competition. They should easily be 4-0-0 in La Liga play, and they know it. They put up a couple of stinkers in the FIFA Club World Cup as well this offseason, losing to Paris Saint-Germain 4-0 to open the tourney, and failing to advance even after beating Botafogo 1-0 in the 87&#8242; minute.</p>
<p>But asking them to get a win at Anfield in their current form may be impossible.</p>

<p>Despite only scoring once from the field in their last two matches, Liverpool has two shutouts to their name. Clearly, their defensive effort was ripped apart after their first two EPL contests. They allowed three shots on target, 10 total attempts and seven corner kicks in each of their first two matches, giving up two goals per game. More recently, Liverpool held Arsenal to just one shot on target, and did not give Burnley any. The defensive problems have been solved, and their offense is perfectly fine.</p>
<p>In their first UCL match, I see the hosts leaving no doubt and winning in shutout fashion. Last season in the UCL, Liverpool shutout three of their four visiting opponents, winning all of their matches at Anfield. They shutout Bologna, Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid. Sure that was last season, but the fire remains for this Liverpool team that is trying to get back to the UCL Title, something they haven&#8217;t done since losing to Real Madrid in the 2022 final match.</p>
<p>Give me Liverpool to look like future UCL Champions in their opening match.</p>
