On Saturday in the earlier stages of the FA Cup, we have two English Premier League teams going head to head who have seen each other plenty this season. So far, we've seen two contests at St. James' Park and two at Etihad Stadium, but we are headed back up north for a third meeting in Newcastle. The Magpies host Manchester City for their fifth competitive match of this season. Will Newcastle United be able to pull off this upset at home? Like I mentioned, these teams have seen each other a ton. In the very first meeting of the season back in November, the Magpies defended their home field, beating Manchester City at St. James' Park by a score of 2-1 in a league match. All three goals came within a seven minute span in the second half. Since then, they've played three matches in 2026 already. They met in a two leg series for the Carabao Cup Semifinals, where City won 5-1 on aggregate score to advance. City beat Newcastle on the road in shutout fashion in the first leg 2-0, and then again in the second leg at home, 3-1, making light work of their foes.
Finally, in their second EPL meeting just a couple weeks ago, Manchester City beat Newcastle at the Etihad, winning 2-1. All three goals were scored in a 13 minute window before the 30′ minute of play. Now, they meet again with just 16 clubs remaining in the competition. I'll admit, it's tough to get a feel for this match without seeing lineups. So let's look at what these clubs have on deck. On Wednesday, Manchester City must go to Spain to take on Real Madrid in the Round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League. Newcastle also has to play a La Liga side, but they get to host Barcelona in the first leg of the UCL as well. I expect both teams to be more worried about their Champions League contests, but regardless, we should have a very competitive match.
If things are tied after 90 minutes, we will see standard extra time as well as penalties to decide a winner, but of course, our wager will be settled after regulation time. I think City are capable of winning this prior to extra time, even if they play some of their reserves. As we saw Semenyo and Haaland both play on Wednesday against Nottingham Forest, it would surprise me if they see the field on Saturday. City should care much more about the EPL and UCL, rather than the FA Cup. However, that doesn't mean they are going to give minimal effort. The reserves are still capable of getting the job done.
At plus money, I will absolutely back Manchester City in this spot, despite what is looming ahead this week. If you'd like, you can get more bang for your buck by pairing them with an inflated under, as I saw 4.5 gets you +165 and even 5.5 gives you +125 if you think we might see a 3-2 City victory.
