On Tuesday in Paris, we saw a nine goal thriller between PSG and Bayern Munich, where the defending UCL Champions were able to come out on top and build an aggregate lead before heading to Germany next week. Today in Spain, we very well may see a scoreless draw, as Atlético Madrid hosts Arsenal in the first leg of their semifinal contest. The Gunners are a clear favorite in this match on the road, but have dropped to third on the overall UEFA Champions League betting board. After the thriller yesterday, apparently bookmakers think the UCL Champ is coming from either France or Germany. Let's start this handicap by explaining that the Gunners have allowed just five total goals throughout their entire UCL campaign. They have only allowed more than one goal in a match once, where they beat Kairat Almaty in the final match of League Phase 3-2, when they already had the No. 1 overall seed locked up. Other than that, Arsenal is allowing just 0.42 goals per match across their 12 contests. That's incredible. Even at home, Atlético might not be able to break through this defense.
When the teams faced off in October in London, Atlético held strong defensively for the first 45 minutes, as all four Arsenal goals came during the second half. I am betting on that happening again. Arsenal will not be overly aggressive on the attack as they face this Atlético squad on the road. They respect how good the hosts can be at creating chances, so for the first half, I see them sitting back, bracing for impact, and looking to control as much possession as possible, thus sucking the life out of the home crowd.
Ultimately, I trust the Gunners' defense to hold on for 45 minutes, let's just hope neither team gets a cheap one.
