There is a battle in the Central division tonight as the Nashville Predators take on the Dallas Stars. The Stars (24-11-5) will host their rivals the Predators (22-18-1) who are coming down from a red hot December. The Dallas Stars are still holding onto the 3rd playoff spot in the Central division (53 points) where the Nashville Predators will be battling to stay in one of the top two Wildcard spots (45 points). This should all lead to a tight game and a battle of two teams that are trying to stop their more recent slides. The Dallas Stars have been without their top goaltender Jake Ottinger for weeks now. Since then they have had to race opponents to the finish line in order to win games. This has lead them to climb up the goals for per game played charts. They currently rank 4th in most goals scored in the entire league this season, averaging 3.64 per game.

This goals for per game average only goes up when they play at home. Over their last 10 home games the Stars are averaging 4.67 goals per game at home. This is good for second in the league. The Predators on the other hand have become more leaky as of late. In the last 10 games they sit in the middle of the pack, allowing 3.44 goals against per game.

A big reason why this team total goals looks so great is these two teams faced off last Saturday with the Predators winning 4-3. We have seen this countless times when two divisional opponents play against each other in a quick turn around that generally the opposite outcome of the first game happens. I know this isn't exactly some sort of scientifically proven phenomenon but it has been a trend in the NHL.

The Stars goalie has not been confirmed yet. But backup Scott Wedgewood has been a big reason why the team has had to outpace opponents. And if their starter Jake Ottinger is in net he  may be a little rusty, which in turn means the Stars will need to outscore their opponent. A high scoring Dallas Stars team in a revenge spot makes their team total an NHL prediction that I think is a best bet.

The most stand out player prop from this game is Matt Duchene. The former Nashville Predator has had a great history playing against his former teams. In 14 games against the team who drafted him, the Colorado Avalanche, Duchene has a point in all but four games. He has 15 points in those 14 games.

After four seasons on the Nashville Predators the team chose to buy-out his contract this offseason. This allowed Duchene to become a free agent, eventually signing with the Dallas Stars. However, this was a slap in the face to the player and we already saw him unleash on the Predators. Last Saturday he face the Predators for the first time and put up an assist. He has a point in 4 of his last 5 games.

Out of the 25 games in which Duchene has a point, he has record an assist in 20 of those. With his assist being plus money, you could cover yourself by taking his goal for a half unit. Duchene's goal holds a lot of value at +220, letting you double your money if he were to score. By taking both props you will have a net gain as long as he gets on the scoresheet. This could also be a game that is worth taking a look at his 2+ points for +275. While he only has 4 multi-point games this season, he should have the extra motivation to show up his former team.
