The red-hot Vancouver Canucks (11-3-1) will host the New York Islanders (5-6-3) tonight at the Rogers Arena. This will be the first time Bo Horvat returns to Vancouver since being traded to the Islanders last season.
Horvat played 9 seasons with the Canucks and was Captain of the team. It should be a very emotional game for him back in front of his old home crowd. I’m sure there will be a tribute video to him as well.
Hopefully the Islanders can get behind Horvat to give him a good game because they have not played well at all. They are coming in on a 5-game losing streak and are 3-5-2 in their last 10 games. They have been outscored 21-9 during this span which is an average of 4.2 goals allowed per game.
New York has not played any defense whatsoever this year. They’re allowing 3.14 goals per game on the season but are giving up 4 goals per game for the month of November so far. This team was always known for its defensive style of hockey, to the point that people say they’re boring, and it has disappeared.
Islander goaltenders Ilya Sorokin and Semyon Varlamov have been doing the best they can. They haven’t been able to keep up in the 3rd period of games due to the lack of defense. It’s running them into the ground and the Isles have lost leads in the 3rd to eventually lose the game.
This will be the 2nd game of the Islanders West Coast Road trip. They just lost the 1st game to the Oilers by a score of 4-1. The Oilers haven’t looked good and now they face a surprisingly, very good Canucks team.
Vancouver is off to a great start this season. They’re sitting 2nd in the Pacific Division and have been an offensive powerhouse. They lead the league in goals per game with 4.4 and shooting percentage with 15%.
To match their offense, they have some great defense as well. Ranking 4th best in the league for goals allowed per game with 2.2. New team Captain Quinn Hughes leads the defense but has been great offensively as well. He’s tied 2nd for points and tied for 1st in assists on the team.
Goaltender Thatcher Demko has also played a huge role in the team’s success. He has a record of 7-3-0 with a 1.96 GAA and .935 save percentage. He ranks 4th in the league in each respective category. Backup Casey DeSmith has done his job when called upon. He sits at 4-0-1 on the year with a 2.67 GAA and a .916 save percentage.
The Canucks are still haven’t lost in regulation at home yet this season, so you know they’ll be looking to keep that going. They’re 8-1-1 in their last 10 games and are coming off a 5-2 win vs the Canadians this past Sunday.
A lot of focus will be on Horvat’s return and the Canucks probably trying to keep him defended as best as possible. The Islanders are really going to need to get crafty to win this game. You can say crafty, or you can just say play defense…choice is yours.

Columbus Blue Jackets vs New York Islanders Prediction and Picks
Prediction and Pick: New York Islanders Moneyline (+130) MyBookie
Listen, I know it’s partially a homer pick, but we have to ride the Horvat narrative for this game. The Islanders are going to want to win this game for him and this is a great spot for them to kill the losing streak.
Islanders star Mat Barzal’s hometown is not far from Vancouver, so expect for him to have family in the house. Barzal has really stepped up his offensive game and is shooting much more than years prior. He has great vision and speed as well, which is what makes him such a dangerous offender.
Sorokin is expected to be between the pipes for the game and you have to continue to back the guy. The Isles have their best chance of winning with him in net, but the team needs to step up defensively. They will also need to play all 3 periods of hockey to win this game, meaning they can’t fizzle out in the 3rd period.
I’m riding the narrative here and having faith the boys can turn it around on a special night for one of their big guys.
Player Prop: Bo Horvat Anytime Goal (+220)
Goes with everything I’ve been saying. He scored a goal at UBS last year when the Canucks game to Long Island and I see him getting another one.
He is going to come out aggressive from the start. Linemate Mat Barzal and Horvat have really been clicking together. Barzal is the type of player to pass first, and this will be a time when he does.
Knowing what it means to Bo, Barzal will look for every chance he can to get him the puck. I like Horvat’s shots up to 5+ as well. The Islanders are going to need to bring the offense and what better way than to go through the guy who knows the place the best.
