We have another big game from the Metro Division tonight. The Philadelphia Flyers will take on the New York Islanders at UBS Arena. These two teams last played in January and the Islanders won 4-0.
Philadelphia is 37-26-12 this season and fifth in the Metro Division. They come into this game on a two-game losing streak after another loss to the Red Wings last night. The Flyers are 6-3-1 in their last ten games, 20-13-4 on the road and 9-9-5 in divisional games.
Their playoff hopes are still alive. The second wild card spot is only two points away for the Flyers, but there are three other teams tied currently. Winning out is Philly's best chance of controlling their own fate at this rate.
On offense, they are not very impressive. They rank in the bottom of the league for goals scored and shots on goal per game. The Flyers pay their game defensively, ranking in the top of the league for goals allowed and shots on goal allowed per game.
Goalie Dan Vladar is expected to get the start. He is 24-13-7 this season with a 2.41 GAA and a .904 save percentage. The Flyers will need him to turn into a brick wall tonight.

New York fighting for their lives to keep their playoff spot

Islanders defenseman Matthew Schaefer takes the puck away from the net with Flyers forward Bobby Brink on him.
The Islanders are 42-29-5 this season and third in the Metro Division. They come into this game on a two-game losing streak after another loss to the Sabres on Tuesday. New York is 5-5-0 in their last ten games, 21-13-2 at home and 14-7-2 in divisional games.
It's the nitty gritty for everyone in the Metro, including the Islanders. They hold the third seed by just one point for the Blue Jackets. Tonight's game is massive for them to widen that lead and possibly send the Flyers packing.
This is a very winnable game for the Islanders. They've played well at home this season the play will be rocking on a Friday night. It's been an exciting year for the Islanders with the emergence of rookie Matthew Schaefer so a playoff berth would be magical.
In net, we're going to see Ilya Sorokin. He is 28-20-2 this season with a 2.54 GAA and a .910 save percentage. Sorokin is 4-5-0 in his last nine start and is due for a bounce back. Let's check out the odds and get into the Flyers vs Islanders picks.

Philadelphia Flyers vs. New York Islanders Picks and Prediction

Islanders goalie Ilya Sorokin makes a save on the Flyers in a game earlier this year.

I think we see a chess match in this game. Both teams, especially the Islanders, are going to play on their toes. Neither team wants to make the mistake that could cost them this big game. The Islanders are well rested and should come in playing hot.
For a side, I lean with the Islanders here. They have everything on their side from rest to home barn, so this is their game to lose. Sorokin will need to return to his normal form if the Islanders are going to stand a chance and I think he does.
Both goalies have had solid seasons with just about 2.50 GAA's. Sorokin has seven shutouts on the year, and one came against the Flyers. For a prop, give me Matthew Schafer to keep firing the puck. He has hit his 4 or more shots on goal in three games straight and four of his last five games.
