The Carolina Hurricanes visit the Boston Bruins with a 3-2 series lead and a chance to close out the series on Thursday night.

Boston encountered some issues in Game 5 that led to a 5-1 loss in Carolina. They went 0 for 3 on the power play and were outshot in the game. They were not able to score until midway through the third period, and by then, it was too late.

Boston goaltender, Jeremy Swayman, only stopped 33 of 37 shots on goal and was overwhelmed in front of the net. The Hurricanes were applying pressure in all three periods and ultimately were too much for the Bruins to figure out.

In between Games 4 and 5, Carolina cleaned up their game and came back more disciplined. They only committed three penalties in Game 5 and were able to negate two of those man up chances by drawing penalties from the Bruins.

Heading into Game 6, neither team has lost at home, but Carolina has a chance to change that and punch their ticket into Round 2. The odds favor Boston slightly at home, but Carolina looks stronger than ever after their impressive Game 5 victory.

Hurricanes Clinching Scenario

The Hurricanes will have to pull off a feat that hasn't been accomplished in this playoff series in the first 5 games. They will have to go on the road and win to avoid a Game 7 back in Carolina.

The trends do not favor Carolina, as the home team has won in each of Boston's last 8 games. The Bruins will try to force the Hurricanes into mistakes like they did in Games 3 and 4 in Boston.

For Carolina, they looked to have cleaned things up and are moving in the right direction defensively. They got a solid outing out of goaltender, Antti Raanta, who made 34 saves in the Game 5 win.

Boston has knocked Carolina out of the playoffs in 2 of the last 3 seasons. They swept the Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference Final in 2019 and beat them in 2020 during the play-in round when the league was in the bubble.

Carolina finally has a chance to give Boston a taste of their own medicine when they meet Thursday for Game 6. They are just one solid defensive performance away from accomplishing their goal and moving on.

I would expect another hard-fought, aggressive battle between the two teams. The streak of home teams being victorious will likely end if the Hurricanes can stick to their game plan and limit penalties. They have scored twice as many goals as the Bruins when the teams are playing 5 on 5.

Hurricanes vs. Bruins Prediction and Best Bets

Hurricanes vs. Bruins Prediction: Hurricanes 4, Bruins 2

Hurricanes vs. Bruins Best Bets: Hurricanes on the moneyline (+110 at Bovada Sportsbook and +105 at BetOnline)

The Hurricanes finally pieced together a complete performance in Game 5 and will want to limit all mistakes. With a chance to advance, they are the better team and have more speed to escape Round 1 with a win.
