Analysis & Breakdown
Most Valuable Purdy
Brock Purdy is operating on a different level this year. He's been the best QB in the NFL, his team is undefeated and no matter who's on the field; the 49ers find a way to get it done.
San Francisco ranks 3rd in points (30.8/game), 1st in redzone efficiency, 1st in 3rd down conversion rate, 3rd in yards per play and they've given up the fewest sacks in the NFL. The offense is averaging 365.0 total yards per game (9th), but giving up just 297.2 yards per game (4th).
The defense has been great and thats while battling a laundry list of injuries. They rank 4th in points allowed, 4th in opponents 1st downs, 4th in opponent yards per play and 7th in opponent pass yards.
Now let's talk about Purdy. He's averaging 239.2 pass yards per game, he's got 13 touchdown passes, 1 touchdown on the ground and just 2 interceptions. He's 2nd in the NFL in passing success rate, 4th in catchable target rate and 4th in completion rate.
Purdy puts his team in the best position to win every single week and it's why he's been my early season MVP this year.
Washington Football Team
The Washington Commanders are coming off one of the ugliest collapses in recent memory. The Commanders were up 14-points with 11 minutes left in the game, then proceeded to give up 2 touchdowns in the last 8 minutes of the game.
The Commanders would go to overtime with the Giants where things would not get any better. Washington had the ball with 24 seconds left, in field goal range and Jayden Daniels took a costly sack that would end the game in a tie.
Poor clock management, poor play calling and just an all around bad game from the entire Commanders coaching staff cost Washington that game. Jayden Daniels had 199 yards through the air, but another 103 on the ground with 2 touchdowns.
The problem in Washington starts on defense. The team ranks dead last in points allowed, opponent redzone efficiency and they've given up the 4th most touchdowns through the air. The defense ranks 29th in pass yards allowed, 24th in opponent 3rd down conversion rate and 19th in opponent yards per play.
This is about as chalky as it gets. The Washington Commanders have given up 7 touchdowns to the TE position this year, the 2nd most in the NFL and they've yet to play their game this week.
The Commanders let Dallas Goedert get in twice, Jake Ferguson twice, Eric Saubert once and then Isaiah Likely twice last week. Washington also ranks dead last in opponent redzone efficiency, allowing their opponents to convert 83% of their redzone trips into touchdowns.
George Kittle leads the 49ers in routes run, yards after the catch, he's 2nd in target share (19.7%) and 1st read target share (24.4%). When the 49ers get into the redzone, that's when we see Kittle thrive.
He's seeing a 23.1% target share in the redzone, 27.8% 1st read target share and it only goes up the closer they get to the goal line. Kittle has a 28.6% target share from within the 10-yard line, he's got 4 touches from inside the 10 and he's got 4 touchdowns to show for it.
With no Deebo Samuel today, that's about another 15-18% target share up for grabs and with the way Washington's defended the position; it just feels like a big Georgie day.
