Analysis & Breakdown

Smarter than your Average Bear

The Chicago Bears are 5-2, they've lost just 1 game with Caleb Williams under center and the vibes could not be any better in the city. The entire city is is behind this Bears' team and for the first time in a long time this team's giving their fans something to cheer about.

The Bears' offense ranks 9th in points, 5th in 1st downs, 6th in 3rd down conversion rate and 2nd in rushing yards per game. The offense has been incredible on the ground and it's been on the shoulders of their two big time RBs; D'Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai.

The Bears' offense runs through their two RBs and it's why Chicago ranks 28th in pass rate and it's why they run the 4th highest rate of 12-personnel. The problem with Chicago is this run game is a lot different without Monangai on the field.

Without Monangai, Chicago's offense averages 98.3 rush yards per game, 3.4 yards per carry, 25th in EPA/rush, 23rd in rush success rate and the offense averages 22.7 points per game.

With him on the field, the offense averages 196.3 rush yards per game, they rank 5th in explosive run rate, average 4.9 yards per carry and the offense is averaging 28.0 points per game.

Tonight not only will the Bears be without one of their bruiser in the backfield, they'll be up against the best run defense in the NFL.

NFL Handicapping 101

The 12th Man

The Seattle Seahawks rank 6th in rush yards allowed this year, 2nd in opponent rush success rate, 2nd in opponent explosive run rate and 2nd in opponent EPA/rush. The defense has done an incredible job of stifling opposing run games and they continue to force a ton of turnovers.

Seattle ranks 7th in takeaways this year, with the 4th most interceptions and 3rd best scoring defense. The unit's allowing just 17.9 points per game, they rank 1st in pass yards allowed, 1st in opponent yards per play, 2nd in opponent 1st downs and 2nd in opponent 3rd down conversion rate.

The only problem Seattle has is once they let teams into the redzone, they've rarely prevented a touchdown. The Seahawks rank 30th in opponent redzone efficiency, allowing opponents to convert 79% of their redzone drives into touchdowns.

Seattle doesn't give up a ton of redzone opportunities, but when they do; they end in a touchdown at a near 80% rate. The Bears have struggled to finish drives this year, ranking 21st in redzone efficiency and having one of the worst goal line success rate in the NFL.

Offensively, the Seahawks have been ALL, Jaxson Smith-Njigba. He's been the entire offense and then some.

Smith-Njigba leads the NFL in targets, yards, receiving touchdowns and it doesn't look like he's finished. He's averaging 123.9 receiving yards per game, he's got 8 touchdown on the year and tonight he goes up against one of the easiest matchups in the NFC.

Thursday Night's Best Bets

Former Stanford TE Sam Roush is Still Finding His Footing with the Bears - Yahoo Sports

Sam Roush o9.5 Receiving Yards (+100) | Lucky Rebel

I'm playing a hunch here. With Cole Kmet set to miss the rest of the year, Head Coach Ben Johnson is going to need someone to step up and take his place.

The Bears run 12-personnel at a top-3 rate in the NFL and that's not something I expect to change with Kmet out for the year; especially with how often this team runs the ball.

Sam Roush is this team's 3rd string TE and he's only playing just 21% of the snaps this year. Colston Loveland is currently playing 85% of offensive snaps and Kmet was right behind him at 66%.

I'm expecting a significant jump in snaps for Roush and while he might not be schemed for early; this Seattle pass rush should generate chances.

The Hawks are generated a top-5 pressure rate, but blitzing at a bottom-5 rate in the NFL. In the 4 games with Caleb under center, Roush leads the Bears in targets per route run against pressure.

He's been a release valve for Caleb this year and while he hasn't seen a ton of pressure this year; that should change tonight.

Zach Charbonet

Zach Charbonet Anytime Touchdown (+140) | Lucky Rebel

The Seahawks have struggled on the goal line this year and now with Zach Charbonet back on the field; I just know Mike Macdonald is happy. Charbonet scored in 10 of 17 games last year, he saw 67% of the carries inside the 5-yard line last year and no one in this Seattle backfield has emerged as a viable option down there.

Charbonet was converting 50% of his carries from inside the 5-yard line into touchdowns and that was tied for the best touchdown rate in the NFL among RB with at least 10 carries from inside 5-yards.

Charby is going to be the goal line back for this offense and this price won't be around for much longer.
