Can the Red Raiders surprise everyone and upset the Oregon Ducks? Oregon Texas Tech Picks

The College Football Playoff Quarterfinals are set, and the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds go head to head in Miami at Hard Rock Stadium. The Texas Tech Red Raiders earned a first round bye, but after beating the James Madison Dukes last weekend, the Oregon Ducks punched their ticket to the Sunshine State. Now the two go head to head on a neutral site with a spot in the CFP Semifinals on the line. The game isn't for over a week, but the lines are out and they are moving, so let's look at the early odds and get a feel for this game.

How good are either of these teams? We honestly don't know, but you better believe we will find out on New Years Day. The Oregon Ducks lost just once this season, to the best team in the country. Forgivable. But what about their wins? Oregon has a win over No. 3 Penn State on the road, who ended the season 6-6. They beat No. 20 Iowa on the road by two points, and then they beat No. 15 USC whose defense couldn't stop a runny nose. Nothing really moves the needle if we are being honest.

But you could say the same about the Red Raiders. Like Oregon, they didn't play anyone difficult during their non conference schedule, and the Big 12 isn't that scary. Now, they beat No. 16 Utah on the road, and beat No. 7 BYU at home and again in the Big 12 Championship. Both of those teams ended the season ranked in the top 15, giving them three more impressive wins than the Ducks have. As far as their one loss, it came on the road to Arizona State by four with their backup quarterback.

Had Behren Morton been healthy for that game, we would be asking ourselves if the undefeated Red Raiders are the best team in the country.

If you like the Red Raiders (like I do), wait. This line opened with the Ducks laying a single point, and now is up to 1.5 or 2 at most books. I will continue to wait, grabbing as much value as I can with the Red Raiders. My plan is to take the moneyline if the number stays below a flat three, but if it gets to the field goal I will be on the points and them to win outright. I am that bought in on the Red Raiders.

You can use the strength of schedule argument against them, but as I believe I proved above, you can say the same about the Ducks. In my mind, the Red Raiders' wins are much more impressive, and I think the Ducks could be in for a rude awakening. They gave up 34 points to James Madison, whose team total was projected at 13.5. Even if you were up big and it was garbage time, that cannot happen. I think the Red Raiders offense will lay the hammer down on the Ducks, who will be a LONG way from home.

I am a Dan Lanning guy, but I'll admit I'm a bigger Big 12 guy. With as little bias as possible, I am trusting the Red Raiders to put the country on notice. They already lucked out and are on the easier side of the bracket. Now they just need to take advantage with a win over Oregon. I'll have an official pick out next week, but let it be known I will be backing the Red Raiders.
