The College Football Playoff finally begins this weekend with four first round games for our viewing pleasure. Capping things off on Saturday Night out in Eugene is the No. 5 Oregon Ducks hosting the No. 12 James Madison Dukes. The Sun Belt Champions have nothing to lose and everything to gain, and you've got to think every G5 team is rooting for them to come out and make this a competitive game, but Dan Lanning is a guy who could lay the hammer down at home. Let's get into our favorite picks in this contest and see how good of a game this might be.

#12 James Madison Dukes vs. #5 Oregon Ducks NCAA Football Insights

Wayne Knight totaled 1,263 rushing yards for JMU this season
There is plenty of talk surrounding the Dukes pertaining to them not belonging in this playoff. I won't argue that they are one of the best 12 teams in the country, because they aren't. But this tournament doesn't involve the best 12 teams, it involves the 12 handpicked participants from the CFP committee, and based on their own criteria, the Dukes belong as the fifth highest ranked conference champion. But the question remains, will they compete against a top five team in the country? Their only loss this year came against their only Power Four opponent, losing to the Louisville Cardinals by two touchdowns.
Oregon's one loss came at home to the 13-0 Big Ten Champion Indiana Hoosiers, very forgivable if you ask me. Since then, they've won six straight, covering their final three spreads to improve to 8-4 ATS this season. But now they are three touchdown favorites against the Dukes. Will they run up the score? Or save their legs for the quarterfinals against the No. 4 Texas Tech Red Raiders?

Spread
- James Madison +21.5 (-115)
- Oregon -21.5 (-105)
Moneyline
- James Madison +850
- Oregon -1800
Total
- Over 49.5 (-108)
- Under 49.5 (-112)
Since it's opening, the total has climbed a point, crossing over the key number of 21. However, I do not see that coming into play. The total has actually ticked down, coming from 51.5 all the way down to 48.5 on some books. Personally, I do not see JMU contributing to the total at all, but I also don't see Dan Lanning giving the Red Raiders everything in his playbook to study on film.
#12 James Madison vs. #5 Oregon NCAA Football Picks and Predictions

Dante Moore and the Ducks are highly motivated to make a deep run in the College Football Playoff
Best Bet: James Madison/Oregon Under 49.5 (-110) Lucky Rebel Sportsbook
The Oregon Ducks will be without a doubt, the hardest defense JMU has faced all season long. The Ducks are top 10 in points allowed per game, second in the nation in yards per play allowed, and are top 30 in third down conversions as well. The secondary is easily top 10, if not, top five in the country, and the trench unit is also top 20 in the nation. Overall, the Ducks are probably a top 10 defense, perhaps even closer to seventh or eighth.
Who has James Madison played that compares? The answer: nobody.
JMU runs the ball better than they throw it, but the Ducks will be able to force them to turn though the air, something they don't like to do (bottom 10 pass play percentage). Louisville has a somewhat comparable defense to Oregon's; the Cardinals are probably a top 35-40 unit. They hosted the Dukes and held them to just 14 points, on 263 yards of offense, forcing two turnovers as well. Being such a run heavy offense, I see James Madison milking plenty of clock, giving less time for the Ducks to pile on the points.
Oregon wins this game relatively easy, and they probably cover the spread as they coast to a 35-10 victory to set up a date with Texas Tech.
