#6 Ole Miss vs. #3 Georgia – January 1
After a mild first round of the College Football Playoffs, the second round is where the fireworks are set off and unforgettable matchups take center stage. Last year, Arizona State nearly upset Texas in an unbelievable thriller. Then Notre Dame took down Georgia. This round should not disappoint either, as No. 6 Ole Miss takes on No. 3 Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. This is a rematch from early October, when the Bulldogs took down the Rebels at home.
Early Line Movement
The line opened on Saturday after Ole Miss took down Tulane, with the Rebels listed as seven point underdogs. Since opening, the number has bounced between 7.0 and 6.5. The total opened at 56 and currently sits between 55.5 and 57, depending on the book.
Before I get into where I am going in this matchup, let us take a trip back to October 18, when the Georgia Bulldogs miraculously covered the 7.5 point spread, when they probably should not have. Why do I say that? For starters, I was holding a Georgia 7.5 ticket in that game, and I did not deserve to cash it. The Bulldogs were outplayed for most of the game leading into the fourth quarter, where they outscored the Rebels 17 to nothing and won 43 to 35.
Revenge is in the Air
I have been talking about this matchup for months, maybe because I think Georgia has coasted through most of the season. Kirby Smart has always made strong second half adjustments, but I do not believe that is sustainable. That is why I am on the Rebels +7. Their dominant win over Tulane the second time around may have given Georgia all the tape they needed, or Ole Miss may still have a ton of motivation fuel to burn off after Lane Kiffin left.
Regardless, this is a very good Ole Miss team, and I wrote about them in my National Champion odds update. They remain one of the most underestimated and doubted teams in the field. They are sitting with the highest odds to win the whole thing, and I do not think it is crazy to sprinkle some Little Debbie money on them.
My distrust of this Georgia team comes from the fact that their biggest win of the season came against a team that had already beaten them. Their 28 to 7 win over Alabama in the SEC Championship is their most impressive result. The Bulldogs got their revenge on the Crimson Tide after falling earlier in the season. Now, the Rebels are in position to get theirs.
