Friday night brings a Big 12 showdown to Ames, where No. 3 Iowa State opens conference play at home against West Virginia. Both teams enter off recent wins, but the circumstances could not be more different. The Mountaineers are playing their first true road game of the season, while the Cyclones have been dominant on both ends of the floor. Iowa State boasts a top 15 offense and defense, thriving on forcing turnovers and controlling the perimeter. West Virginia now faces its toughest test to date in a hostile environment against one of the nation's most complete teams.

West Virginia vs. #3 Iowa State Bet

Friday night Big 12 showdown takes place in Ames, as No. 3 Iowa State hosts West Virginia. Both teams enter the weekend coming off wins in their previous matchups. The Mountaineers have not played since December 22, while the Cyclones are fresh off an 89 to 61 win over Houston Christian. This matchup marks the first conference game of the season for both teams. Do the Mountaineers have enough to cover the 16.5, or will the Cyclones continue their early dominance and secure their first conference win of the season? Let us dive in.

Sorry, Ross

If you do not know by now, I am a huge fan of Ross Hodge. I love his coaching style, and his teams consistently play lockdown defense. That said, I am fading him and his team Friday night, as the Mountaineers make their first road trip of the season to Ames, Iowa. Yes, you read that correctly. It took until January 2, 2026 for West Virginia to play in their first true road game of the season. Overall, the Mountaineers have played just four games away from home, all of which came at neutral sites. In those four games, West Virginia lost to Clemson, Xavier, Wake Forest, and Ohio State. It is a small sample size, but they struggled to defend the perimeter, attack the glass, and they turned the ball over far too often.

First True Test

West Virginia has played the 40th easiest schedule in college basketball, and now faces its toughest test of the season. Beyond strength of schedule, Haslametrics gives Iowa State the edge in all play performance, average season rank, and momentum. The Cyclones have maintained a top 15 offense and defense to start the year. They excel at forcing turnovers, shooting from beyond the arc, and keeping opponents off the free throw line.

Despite their issues away from home, West Virginia did keep things close against the two top 50 teams they faced, losing to Clemson and Ohio State by a combined four points. However, Iowa State is in a completely different realm than those teams. The Cyclones are 5-0 against top 100 opponents, beating Mississippi State by 16, St. John's by one, Creighton by 18, Syracuse by 11, Purdue by 23 on the road, and Iowa by one. They are winning these games by an average of 14 points. I do not believe the Mountaineers stand a chance Friday night. Give me Iowa State to cover the 16.5.
