Washington vs. #7 Nebraska Bet
Here we have a Big Ten clash as the Washington Huskies head to Lincoln to take on No. 7 Nebraska. The Cornhuskers remain one of the few unbeaten teams in the country, coming off a road win over Northwestern on Saturday. Meanwhile, Washington has dropped back to back games against Michigan and Michigan State. The question tonight is whether the Huskies can keep this one close, or if another top ranked opponent gets the better of them.
Dogs with Bite
Washington has battled through a gauntlet over its last five games, a stretch that should either have them fully prepared or completely worn down. Given that three of the last five were at home, I lean toward preparation. The Huskies opened this run at Indiana on January 4th, followed by trips to Purdue on the 7th, then home games against Ohio State, Michigan, and Michigan State this past Saturday. They won only one of those five, but they covered in three. This feels like a spot where Washington is due for a strong showing.
Nebraska continues to look like one of the most complete teams in the country and is protecting its unbeaten record. A loss may be coming at some point, though maybe not tonight. Even so, I like Washington to cover. Nebraska's last five games included Michigan State at home, road trips to Ohio State and Indiana, Oregon at home, and Northwestern on the road. Those are quality opponents, but the overall grind does not quite match what Washington has faced this month.
Battle Tested Huskies
Haslametrics lists Washington with the 15th toughest schedule in the country, while Nebraska sits 47th. He also gives Washington a slight edge in consistency, noting, "This contest features two of the NCAA's more erratic teams. Nebraska ranks 351st nationally in consistency, while Washington is presently 293rd." Those numbers suggest Nebraska may be overperforming relative to its consistency profile.
In six true road games this season, Washington has maintained a top 100 offense and defense. The Huskies excel at protecting the basketball, guarding the perimeter, generating second chance points, and converting free throws, all ranking inside the top 75. They do struggle from beyond the arc, sitting 276th in three-point rate, but that aligns with their approach. Washington attacks the rim frequently and does so efficiently, ranking 86th in two point percentage.
Keys to Success
Nebraska has been impressive against top 100 teams, but there are areas Washington can exploit. The Cornhuskers rank 279th in offensive rebounding, while Washington is 78th in defensive rebounding on the road. Nebraska also struggles to get to the line, ranking 238th in free throw rate offense. Washington is 83rd in free throw rate defense and does a solid job keeping opponents off the stripe. Finally, Nebraska allows the sixth most three-point attempts in the country. Washington does not rely on the deep ball, but if it is shooting from there, the looks should be clean. Add it all up, and the road dog has a real path to keeping this within 12 points and making things interesting in Lincoln.
