We head to Madison, where the Badgers host the Scarlet Knights after yet another big win. On the other side, Rutgers is coming off its biggest win of the season, taking down Northwestern at home on Sunday. Do the Badgers have another massive performance in them, or will the Scarlet Knights show up as an underdog? I want to fade the team closest to the sun. right now.
Similar to my reasoning behind fading Kentucky, Wisconsin is coming off a buzzer beater three to take down Minnesota on the road earlier this week. Now they head back home to host a Rutgers team that is also coming off a win over Northwestern. Yes, the Scarlet Knights were underdogs in that matchup, but that game was played on Sunday and plenty of time has passed. This is a much quicker turnaround for the Badgers following an emotional victory on Tuesday.
Trust the Narrative
There are not many stats that strongly support this as a clear spot to back Rutgers after Wisconsin's emotional win. However, Haslametrics does give the Scarlet Knights a few advantages, specifically in momentum and consistency. He notes, "Wisconsin is one of Division I's more erratic squads, ranking 258th in the country in consistency. Rutgers sits closer to the middle of the pack in this category." He also points out, "Both teams enter this contest playing some of their best basketball of the season. Rutgers ranks 78th in positive momentum, while Wisconsin checks in at 107th."
Against top 100 teams this season, Rutgers owns a 1-7 record. Despite the struggles, there are a few bright spots. The Scarlet Knights rank inside the top 100 in offensive rebounding, and generating second chance points will be crucial. Free throw rate defense, keeping opponents off the line, will also be key to covering this spread. Finally, Rutgers does a strong job forcing turnovers.
One area where Rutgers should hold its own is not necessarily defending the three, but limiting attempts. Wisconsin ranks inside the top 25 in three point rate, while Rutgers sits 83rd in three point rate defense. If the Scarlet Knights can limit clean looks from deep, they should be live to cover this number.
