Doug Gottlieb and Green Bay are favored by a touchdown over the IU Indy Jaguars tonight - NCAA Basketball Picks

Festivus brings us an early afternoon college basketball matchup that offers far more than a casual holiday watch. Green Bay heads south to take on Campbell in a game that should keep the college sickos entertained. One team enters riding momentum fueled by shooting variance, the other looking to correct course after a pair of tough losses against elite competition. Pace, free throws, and defensive efficiency all play major roles in how this game could unfold. This is a classic spot where recent results can be misleading, and where digging into the numbers helps separate noise from signal.

Green Bay vs. Campbell Best Bet

Nothing like a little afternoon college hoops to kick off the great holiday of Festivus. The Green Bay Phoenix head to North Carolina to take on the Campbell Camels. Both teams are riding streaks, Green Bay on a two game winning streak, while Campbell is on a two game losing streak. Whose streak comes to an end this afternoon?

After announcing he will be stepping away from his Fox Sports Radio show, Green Bay head coach Doug Gottlieb looks to keep his two game winning streak alive against the Camels. The Phoenix are coming off back to back outright wins as at least three point underdogs against IU Indy and UC Santa Barbara. In their 67 to 64 win over the Gauchos, Green Bay shot 52.4% from deep. In their win over the Jaguars, they shot 42.9%. Over a two game span, they are shooting nearly 48% from deep. That is a major outlier for a team averaging just 32.9% from beyond the arc this season, ranking 208th per Bart Torvik.

Bounce Back Humps

On the other side, Campbell is coming off two brutal losses to Gonzaga and Minnesota. Prior to that, they beat Ball State and a non Division I opponent. With the Phoenix coming off two straight outright victories, this feels like the right spot to fade them. I lean with the Camels in this matchup. I initially leaned toward the over due to the pace Campbell will try to force, but with how efficient Green Bay has been, I do not want to rely on them staying hot, especially from deep.

The Camels rank 10th in pace at home this season. Their offense does not have the prettiest numbers, but when the goal is to overwhelm opponents with volume and shot attempts, the box score is rarely clean. Campbell excels in a few areas where Green Bay has struggled. First, the Camels are one of the best teams in the country at getting to the line, ranking 14th in free throw rate offense. In nine road games, the Phoenix rank 303rd in free throw rate defense. Second, Campbell generates second chance points at a strong clip, ranking 126th. Green Bay has struggled badly on the glass, ranking eight worst in that category.

On top of that, Green Bay simply does not defend well. They rank bottom 100 in nearly every defensive metric, including bottom 50 in interior defense and turnover percentage. Campbell is much stronger defensively than offensively, and if they can limit Green Bay from staying hot from deep, this sets up as a spot where the Camels can take control and head into the holiday break with a win.

Give me Campbell to bounce back, and Green Bay to come back down to earth.
