Creighton vs. Providence Bet
Another Big East battle goes down in Rhode Island as a struggling Providence Friars squad hosts the Creighton Bluejays. Creighton is looking to keep its momentum rolling after taking down Georgetown earlier in the week. This is a team that struggled out of the gate early in the season but has turned things around over the last month. Since December 17th, the Bluejays are 6-2 straight up. On the other side, the Friars do have a big win over St. John's under their belt, but they have struggled to win games over the last month. Will tonight be the night the hometown team turns it around, or will Creighton secure another Big East victory? Time to dive in…
After needing overtime to take down Georgetown on Tuesday as a 9.5-point favorite, this feels like a great spot to fade the Bluejays. It has been an underwhelming season for Creighton as it searches for its identity without Ryan Kalkbrenner and Steven Ashworth. The Bluejays have been fine at times, but there are some serious flaws. That is why I am looking to take the short home underdog Friars this evening. No longer named The Dunk, the Amica Mutual Pavilion should be rocking. The Friar faithful will be ready for this Friday night matchup, especially after losing five of their last six games. This team needs its crowd.
Through 18 games this season, the Bluejays rank bottom 50 in turnover defense, free throw rate offense, and defensive block percentage. Digging deeper, in their eight games away from home, they rank bottom 100 in turnover rate defense, offensive rebounding, free throw rate offense, free throw percentage, and both offensive and defensive block percentage.
Make Them Run
Creighton prefers to play at a slower pace than Providence, and that could be an issue for the road favorite. At home this season, Providence ranks 20th in tempo nationally, per Bart Torvik. On top of that, the Friars offense has been excellent at Amica Mutual Pavilion, ranking top 50 in adjusted offensive efficiency, eFG%, block percentage, and both two and three-point percentage. They also rank 66th in free throw percentage.
Defensively, the Friars have struggled overall, ranking 230th nationally. That comes with the territory when playing at a fast pace and trying to outscore opponents. There are still some positives. At home, Providence ranks 47th in two point percentage defense and 96th in free throw rate defense. Protect the paint and avoid fouling, that is a formula I can get behind.
This will be the Friars 11th game against a top 100 opponent, and they currently have just one win, a road victory over St. John's earlier this month. With the recent stretch of losses, I expect Providence to be locked in tonight and ready to defend home court at The Dunk, sorry, Amica Mutual Pavilion.
Sko Friars!
