The holidays are right around the corner, and tonight and tomorrow's slate is filled with matchups where some teams are simply looking ahead to their first break of the season. It feels like a stretch where teams are trying to get through games and prepare for the second half of the year. Tonight, in the matchup between Coastal Carolina and St. Joe's, it would not be surprising if both sides are ready to get in and get out, with a focus already shifting toward conference play.
Both teams are coming off wins in their previous games. The Hawks have looked solid to start the season, owning a 7-4 record. On the other side, the Chanticleers sit at 7-6. Will both teams come out ready to play lockdown defense, or should we expect some eyes drifting toward Christmas break? Let us dive in.
Line Movement
The line in this matchup opened at 8.5 in favor of St. Joe's and has not moved since. On the other hand, the total opened at 141.5, climbed to 146.5, and has since settled back to 144.5 on some books like BetOnline. I do lean to the over in this matchup. The movement does not surprise me, as both teams like to play fast, especially Coastal Carolina, who ranks inside the top 75 in pace. St. Joe's has picked things up inside their home gym, though they are typically closer to the middle of the pack. Coastal Carolina is 7-2 to the over on the road, while St. Joe's is 3-1 to the over at home.
On the season, both teams are allowing opponents to score more than 73 points per game. Coastal Carolina has struggled to consistently reach 70 points per game, while St. Joe's is averaging nearly 79 points per game at home this season. It is also worth noting that the Hawks have faced the 19th easiest schedule to open the season, while Coastal Carolina has played the 72nd easiest.
High Volume Shots
This matchup should feature a massive volume of three point attempts, and we will be hoping they fall at an efficient rate. The Hawks rank in the bottom 25 in three point percentage, yet they attempt the 79th most threes in the country. St. Joe's also allows the 36th most three point attempts. On the other side, the Chanticleers allow the 85th most threes while ranking 171st in three point rate allowed. Coastal Carolina does convert threes at a higher clip than the Hawks, so the high volume should still work in our favor.
Defensively, the Chanticleers struggle to force turnovers and send opponents to the free throw line at a high rate. The Hawks rank inside the top 35 in free throw percentage, so if they attack the rim and get to the line, they should convert the majority of those chances.
With both teams likely looking ahead to the holiday break, the lockdown defense may be saved for next week. This should still be a fast paced game with plenty of possessions. Advanced analytics project the Hawks to win 74 to 69. Neither Bart Torvik nor Haslametrics projects Coastal Carolina to eclipse 70 points, but I think they do. Neither defense has been truly tested this season, and I believe Coastal Carolina can keep this game competitive and push the scoring higher than the total suggests.
