Albany vs. Maine Bet
We head way out East, where the Maine Black Bears host the Albany Great Danes for a good old fashioned America East showdown. Albany has been playing some great ball over the last few weeks, winning their last three-games at home. Meanwhile, Maine is riding a two-game losing streak and is aiming to get back on track this evening. With New Hampshire on the horizon for Albany, could they be looking ahead to a much tougher opponent? I think they might…
Trust Thy Plums
I have been staring at this matchup all day because I want to get involved and back the Black Bears as home underdogs. Albany is riding a three-game winning streak, covering all three spreads along the way. In their most recent 75-68 win over Vermont, the Great Danes were 5.5-point underdogs. So why am I nervous? Well, Maine is 357th on Bart Torvik and is not the sexiest team in the country. However, they are coming off a 17-point loss to New Hampshire as a short home favorite. This team needs to bounce back.
Albany enters tonight with a 1-8 record away from home this season. That lone win came against Stony Brook back on December 17. Their last three games have been at home, where the Great Danes have not played much this season. They have played a total of four home games. Hopefully they got a little too comfortable playing at home.
Defense > Offense
The Black Bears live and die by their defense, which is ranked 24th in eFG% at home. This game is going to be a rock fight from start to finish. Maine will force this game to be played at a turtle pace. This defensive unit at home, excels at guarding the perimeter, ranking top 20 in three-point percentage and top 40 in three-point rate. They block shots at a high rate and protect the interior as well as anyone, ranking top 80 in both categories.
Albany, in conference play, has a similarly ranked defense. Over the full season, they do not come close. Away from home, they rank 319th in adjusted defensive efficiency, 334th in defensive rebounding, and 291st in two-point percentage defense.
Sure, Maine does not have a great offense, but they do a few things right. They get to the line at the highest rate in the conference, they protect the basketball, and they create second chance points.
With how well Maine guards the perimeter and limits opponent shots from deep, I have a ton of confidence they can take that part of Albany's game away. The Great Danes are already bottom 35 in three point percentage. On top of that, they are the seventh worst free throw shooting team in the country. Away from home, that number drops to second worst.
Let the Black Bears FEAST.
