#11 North Carolina vs. Miami Bet
We are all over Miami tonight, no not unbeaten Miami of Ohio, Miami of Florida. Saturday's win over Duke was clearly North Carolina's Super Bowl. Yes, it is the biggest rivalry in sports, but they won on a last second three, which led to Tar Heel fans storming the court. Then came the post game interview with the "we had to give them that belt" quote, as if they won by 20. Now they have to pack up and head to Miami to take on a Hurricanes team that has been playing some solid basketball as of late. I have to fade the Tar Heels.
FADE THE STORM!
The Hurricanes are like most college basketball teams, far better inside their home gym. Haslametrics has Miami ranked 179th in away home court metrics, while the Tar Heels are the second worst road team in the country. On top of that, Haslam gives Miami a significant edge in consistency. He notes that Miami is one of college basketball's more consistent teams, ranking 33rd in the country, while North Carolina grades closer to the middle of the pack.
This season, through 14 home games, the Hurricanes have posted a top 55 offense with a defense hovering around the top 100. Overall, they are one of the better rebounding teams in the country, they attack the rim as well as almost anyone, and they force turnovers at a high rate. Against top 100 opponents, they raise their level on both ends, ranking 48th in adjusted offensive efficiency and 58th in defensive efficiency.
North Carolina has been strong on the year, ranking inside the top 50 on both offense and defense. However, in six true road games, their defense falls all the way to 173rd. They rank in the bottom 15 in eFG% defense and three point percentage defense, and they are also bottom 100 in free throw percentage. With how drastic the defensive drop off has been away from home, the Hurricanes offense should be able to hang around in this matchup.
Miami will also look to push the pace, as they rank 59th in tempo nationally. North Carolina is roughly 100 spots slower. If the home team can control the tempo, they can keep this close and potentially come out on top. I expect some regression from the Tar Heels after Saturday's emotional win, and a Hurricanes team ready to bring them back down to earth.
