Analysis & Breakdown

Motor City Monsters

The Detroit Pistons are the No. 1 team in the Eastern Conference and the No.2 team in the entire NBA. Detroit ranks 2nd in offensive rating, 2nd in defensive rating and are in the midst of the five game win streak. We saw what this team is capable of last year, but they've taken it to another level this season.

Cade Cunningham's have an MVP type of year and even bookmakers have taken notice. The fifth year PG is averaging 25.6 points, 9.8 assists and 5.8 rebounds per game. He's helped change the culture here in Detroit and the entire team has fed off his energy.

Jalen Duren is back in the lineup after serving his two game suspension for a fight that took place in Charlotte. Isaiah Stewart remains out with five games remaining on his suspension, but both Beef Stew and Duren have been key parts of this culture shift.

Head Coach J.B. Bickerstaff has brought a defense first mentality to Detroit and his players have fed off of it. Detroit ranks 3rd in points allowed, 1st in opponent effective field goal percentage and 4th in opponent 3-point percentage. The defense ranks 1st in blocks, 1st in steals and top five in both points allowed in the paint and fast break points allowed.

This defense is real and it's really physical. The team ranks 30th in opponent free throw rate and opponent free throws allowed. They don't give up easy buckets and have no problem sending you to the line.

The Extraterrestrial

Victor Wembanyama is not of this world and it feels like we haven't even scratched the surface of what he can really do. The third year Frenchman is averaging 24.3 points, 11.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game. He's shooting 51.1% from the field, 35.7% from beyond the arc and 80.1% from the free throw line.

Wemby leads the NBA in total blocks, averaging 2.7 per game; despite missing 14 games this year. The Spurs are also just significantly better with him on the floor. San Antonio's offensive rating jumps from 118.0 with him off the floor to 121.5 with him in the game. Defensively the difference is even bigger; 115.0 with him off the floor, 109.2 with him on the floor.

Wembanyama's played the Pistons just once in his career, recording a triple double with 16 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. He played just 21 minutes and the Spurs won by 22 points. This was in 2024, Cade was out for the year and Pistons had won just 3 of their first 40 games.

Both teams went into that off-season once again as lottery teams. Fast forward to now, both team sit top three in the league, with both Cade and Wemby making their second (stright) All-Star appearance.

This game will be the first time these two young stars collide and I'm sure it will be a game to remember.

Monday Night's Best Bets

Victor Wembanyama

Victor Wembanyama o37.5 PRA (-110) | Lucky Rebel

Let's just get a little chalky and take a look at the Extraterrestrial. Wembanyama's averaging just 29.0 minutes per game this year and he's still cleared this line in 53% of his games. He's the Spurs leading scorer by a wide margin and the bigger the game the better we've seen Wembanyama play.

Tonight's matchup with Detroit is a the type of matchup used around the league as a 'measuring stick'. Two young teams, thriving with two young superstars and both sitting atop their respective conferences. This will be the first of two matchups, both games coming in the span of just over two weeks.

The Pistons are one of the toughest defenses in the NBA and points are going to come at a premium tonight. Exactly why I'm going to someone I think is matchup proof. Detroit also ranks dead last in opponent free throws per game and that's exactly where Wemby's got the advantage. He's taking 44.1% of the Spurs' free throw attempts and averaging 7.1 free throw attempts per game.

Look for Wemby to attack the offensive glass tonight and even maybe involve his teammates a little more than normal.
