The first night of the postseason finishes in the City of Angels. The Los Angeles Lakers will host the Houston Rockets for Game 1 of this Western Conference Quarterfinal.

This will be just the third time in the entirety of their careers, that Lebron James and Kevin Durant go head to head in the NBA Playoffs. This will be the first time the two meet outside of the NBA Finals.

Analysis & Breakdown

Lebron James

Showtime

The biggest story coming into Game 1 is the two guys that won't even be out there; Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves. Both remain out of the lineup, with Luka just returning from a trip to Europe where he went to receive treatment on his hamstring. My guess is we'll see Luka suit up by the time Game 3 rolls around, but can the Lakers hold it down until then?

Luka was averaging 33.5 points, 7.7 rebounds and 8.3 assists per game. He was shooting 47.6% from the field and 36.6% from beyond the arc. The Lakers went 43-21 in games with Luka in the lineup and the team's shooting 50% from the field with him out there. So I ask again, can they survive till he gets back?

The entire weight of a franchise once again falls on the shoulders of Lebron James. At 41-years old, Lebron once again leads the charge for a team looking to make noise in the postseason. In year 23, Lebon's averaging: 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists per game.

In games without both Reaves and Dončić, Lebron averaged 24.4 points, 7.2 rebounds and 10.4 assists. They'll need this version of Lebron if they hope to come out on top.

Slim Reaper

Who better to go toe to to with a 41-year old Leborn, than a 37-year old Kevin Durant? Durant's played the second most minutes in the NBA this year and even at 37, he's averaging 26.0 points per game and he's been incredibly efficient while doing it.

Outside of Durant, Amen Thompson's beginning to come into his role as a full time starter and after cold start, Jabari Parker Jr.'s been a lot better over the last month. Alperen Sengun's averaging 20.4 points per game this year and has been the Rockets' second leading scorer.

The problem with Houston's been reliability of everyone outside of Durant. The trio of Sengun, Smith Jr., and Thompson have all shown up at different points of the year and when they do the Rockets win more games. The problem's been how much they rely on Durant and in the postseason a poor shooting night can turn an entire series.

Like I said above, is third time Lebron and Durant will meet in the playoffs. Durant holds the series record at 2-1, winning 9 of the 14 games they've played. Tonight we tune in for Game 1 of this series, but Game 15 of this postseason rivalry. I cannot wait.

Saturday Night's Best Bets

kevin durant

Kevin Durant o24.5 (-110) | Lucky Rebel

In the 14 playoff games that Kevin Durant's played against Lebron James, he's averaging 31.7 points per game. Durant's taking 20.6 shot attempts per game in these 14 games and he's shooting 54.5% from the field.

Durant's hit this line just once against the Lakers this year but he shot the ball 56.1% from the field in those three games. He saw a decrease in volume but tonight, on the road for Game 1; this is when the Slim Reaper strikes.

Los Angeles also doesn't have a good matchup for Durant. Marcus Smart and Rui Hachimura are probably both going to see a bulk of the matchups with KD tonight and in this series. In matchups against Smart going back five years, Durant's got a 62.7% true shooting and averaging 32.9 points per 75 possessions.

Rui Hachimura

Rui Hachimura o17.5 P/R (-120) | Lucky Rebel

Rui's faired a lot better against Durant and it's why I think he'll see a lot more time out there tonight. In that same five year span, Durant's averaging 16.6 points per 75 possessions against Rui and he's held Durant to a 57.9% true shooting.

Hachimura's also played eight games without Dončic and Reaves this year. In these eight games he's averaging 16.0 points, 4.4 rebounds and he's shooting over 50% from the field and three point rage.

The Lakers need all hands on deck and Rui's one of the team's best defenders. I'd be surprised if he didn't see a decent uptick in minutes.
