Analysis & Breakdown

Empire State of Mind

The New York Knicks have won 40 games with 19 left on the schedule. They sit third in the Eastern Conference, third in offensive rating and fifth in net rating. The team's been good and that's a tough thing for me to say as a Celtics fan.

Jalen Brunson leads the Knicks, averaging 26.5 points per game on shooting splits of 47/38/84. Alongside Brunson is a loaded roster with Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, and Mikal Bridges. Towns' is New Yorks second leading scorer, averaging 19.7 points per game and leads the team with 11.8 rebounds per game.

When both Towns and Brunson are on the floor together, the Knicks offensive rating is 122.9; higher than the No.1 ranked Denver Nuggets. Compare that to 96.5 with both of them off the floor and you can see how important they are to this Knicks' team.

The problem for these two comes up on the defensive side of the ball. When both Brunson and Towns are on the floor, the Knicks defensive rating sits at 115.7; good enough for what would be 21st in the NBA. With both guys off the floor, that defensive rating drops to 107.9. That's better than every team in the NBA not named Oklahoma City or Detroit.

The Knicks need to find the perfect balance and so far they've done a good job. Good enough for third place in the East, just 1.5 games back of the Celtics in second place.

Rocky Mountain Mayhem

Denver comes into tonight's game on the second night of a back to back. Nikola Jokić and company secured a hard fought win against Lebron James and the Lakers; winning 120 to 113. Both Jokić and Jamal Murray finished with 28 points; with the big Serbian also recording a triple double in the process.

Murray shot just under 50% from the field and dished out 7 assists in the process. The Nuggets have now won back to back games for the first time since January 30th and for the first time since Jokić made his return.

Denver has a chance to win three straight games tonight and it would be the first time they've done that since mid January. Thankfully enough, the Nuggets have been great on zero days rest this year.

Denver is 9-4 on the second night of a back to back this year, scoring 122.8 points per game and allowing just 115.8 per game. With Jokić in the lineup, that jumps to 129.3 and the team shoots 52.4% from the field.

Like I said above, the Denver Nuggets operate on demon time on zero days rest. Normally I would think Jokić or Murray would sit tonight, but with the Nuggets slipping to fifth in the Western Conference, they need to keep stacking wins. Add to that the fact Aaron Gordon could be back in the lineup and I'm loving the Nuggets tonight.

The Knicks come into Denver in the midst of a weird road trip/home trip. New York finished the month of February and entering March playing four of their last six games on the road. The two home games came against the Thunder and the Spurs, with both games being split by a road game in Toronto.

Normally this par for the course at this point in the NBA season, however the Knicks are going into the Mile High City. The altitude here in Denver catches up to the best of them and late in games is when you see teams start to lose their legs.

The Nuggets are also averaging 129 points per game on the second night of a back to back with Jokic in the lineup and I don't see how the Knicks plan to stop this offense. I'm expecting a ton of points tonight but I think Denver comes out on top when the dust finally settles.
